Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Unicorns have never threatened the US, either.
That's like saying "Unicorns have murdered me as often as sociopathic criminals, ergo, Sociopathic criminals are as big a threat to me as Unicorns"

Leviticus 19:34Actually unicorns are more common on US soil then ISIS fighters, I believe John Oliver had a unicorn on Last Week Tonight, while I'm not aware of an ISIS fighter ever being found on US soil.

, guys. Calling it.
Next year, the Republican party will adopt one as its mascot. So much edgier than an elephant.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Also ISIS,or it's minions, have pulled off several attacks, I remember one guy brought a knife to his workplace and started killing people, after shouting something about glory to the Islamic State or something like that. They found ISIS propaganda on his computer.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. At this point, who hasn't threatened the U.S.? In many parts of the Eastern Hemisphere, making wild claims about sticking it to the U.S. automatically nets you +5 Badass Points with your peers.
Few are dumb enough to actually try it, though. Fewer still succeed.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh how I love the finger pointing that follows these tragic incidents.
You know what also is great?
The blatant politicization from both parties that will inevitably follow. Forget the fact 14 people are dead, and the criminals are on the run; making political points and scoring with the base is/or will be way more important.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.Of course it is. Every time there's a shooting, everyone starts talking about ISIS. It's gotten to the point that it feels like, on some level, we want it to be ISIS. We want this to be an ISIS attack. Whether because we want to use it to justify cutting our support in the Syrian crisis or lending further support and taking more direct control, our politicians crave an ISIS 9/11.
So whenever there's violence in our country, up pop the heads like gophers. "ISIS?! Is it ISIS? Can we finally use that headline we've been saving?"
We have a love-hate relationship with ISIS because they're Evil Foreigners, and that's our favorite thing. It lets us ignore the problems inherent in our country.

I wasn't just talking about ISIS.
I'm tired of people in general jumping the gun and blaming the most convenient group of their choosing whether it be Right Wing Fanatics or Islamic Terrorists.
Why can't people wait for the facts before making conclusions?

No, we say it because ISIS has been threatening it for years. And by the same token I can practically see your mouths watering at the prospect of it being the far right. Until we know who did this ISIS is indeed a possibility.

Basically the same reason. Everyone's lurking on the edge of their seat, just waiting for that smoking gun.

That's kind of generalizing.
Besides I'm centrist, and unaffiliated with either party.
Not only that, you'll have the gun control nuts, gun rights nuts, and everyone else jumping on board to make their points known.
I'm sick and tired of this country doing this every time something tragic happens.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.ISIS has never infiltrated a combatant into the United States. Every single domestic attack that is related to them has been of the homegrown variety. Same with the recent Paris attacks. These people are not sneaking jihadists in with refugees; they are putting propaganda out that vulnerable and disaffected individuals absorb and act on. No amount of border security, no amount of registering Muslims, no amount of expulsion of Hispanics can prevent that.
The "solutions" offered by the right are, quite simply, addressing the wrong problems.

Yeah, the hosts at a radio station I listen to espoused the tired old "If someone had been armed" cliche, which actually got me incensed enough to call in in this case, pointing out that anything short of a shotgun or rifle (neither of which would be a good idea in that type of facility) would have a chance of penetrating the body armor they were wearing. When they tried offering up "Well shoot them in the leg!", I countered with the point that, sure, you might be able to do that - and they'd have a free shot at you in the meantime.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?""Shoot them in the leg/arm/head/gun!" arguments miss a very important point: those parts of the body are really hard to hit. You can't just pull up the V.A.T.S. screen, check percentages, and fire off on whichever limb has the best accuracy percentage. Aiming is not a free action.
Military teaches you to shoot for center mass for a reason: it's the most stationary part of the body. The easiest part to hit. Most bullet-stopping body armor only covers center mass for the same reason.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I don't particularly like it either. It's gotten to the point of being routine that a tragedy will lead to arguing that goes exactly nowhere.
I mean, I suppose the problem is that technically, it's hard not to politicize a tragedy (IE, 'Pearl Harbor means we should join WWII'-technically, a political statement). On the other hand, the problem is just the shear repetition of it all-it's always the same arguments which never convince anybody.
Leviticus 19:34The CNN live video is showing one or more possible suspects down; one appears to have been shot because there is blood everywhere. A black SUV is under full cover from what looks like two dozen armed police, and has been shot to hell and gone.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Assuming it's the shooters that we're looking at, the police annihilated them. The scene is gruesome.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Unicorns have succeeded in pulling off terrorist attacks on American soil as many times as ISIS has. So if we're considering ISIS to be a probable suspect, we must also consider unicorns.
