Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I read that article about the "999 classified emails" on Clinton's server, and it seemed to me that the policy under which they would be considered such is highly subjective, basically being left up to the State Department to decide. There's just no fire beneath that smoke.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm sure Obama peed in the shower a time or two. That doesn't disqualify him to be President. And Bubba Bill lied about the Lewinsky affair. In a perfect world, we could afford to choose a candidate with zero flaws. This isn't that world.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'd rather apply the same standard to both parties than dismiss an imperfection out of hand.
Also, the Lewinski affair is only notable in that he lied to Congress, not in the affair itself (beyond moral issues). That's not nothing. Same with the emails. The emails themselves are irrelevant, but going outside accepted procedure is an issue. Downplaying it because she's a democrat is as silly as playing it up like another Watergate because she's a democrat.
If she did wrong, it needs investigating, leave the feds to do their job and don't beat the public over the head with it until it's over.
The jist of it seems to be that there wasn't a regularly enforced procedure that required more than what she was doing at the time. And the Republicans were probably just as equally guilty of doing whatever this was, they just decided to "beat the public over the head with it" while not actually thinking she did anything that was too terribly wrong. Mostly because the Benghazi thing couldn't stick.
Not exactly hard, considering the Dems this year haven't had a dozen or more candidates all trying to outcrazy each other. The Republicans managed to set the bar pretty low this time.
Anyway, on the Trump thing, gonna say he's again not going to lose popularity simply because of who he's been appealing to. Compassion and common sense are lacking in that demographic. And what part of any of our war over there has been politically correct? Jesus, a morbid sense of curiosity wants to ask him what, exactly, that phrase is supposed to mean.

Agreed. Let the Feds do their work investigating the issue, and if it turns out that something illegal and prosecutable was done, deal with it at that time.
I suspect that Trump is implying, if not outright stating, that we should wage a terrorism campaign against the terrorists: make it too personally costly for them to take up the jihad by killing their women and children. That this betrays a catastrophic misunderstanding of their motivations should be obvious, but is pretty much water under the bridge for Trump.

Yeah. That and that Clinton and Sanders seem to have made a tacit agreement not to go that way and to campaign like gentlemen (gender-neutral gentlemen, in case I have to say it). Which has kept them mostly out of the news in a way that's very good for Clinton and, if Sanders somehow does get Presidential on us and win the primary, good for Sanders.

Looks like that's a new one. /sigh
Thing is with the emails is that she didn't really go outside the accepted procedure if by accepted procedure you mean "what most people actually do." What she didn't do is use badly implemented tech. It's a manufactured scandal. Not one with real substance. The majority of the congress critters dissing her about it have turned out to be doing the same thing.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. Dick

I don't want to give Fox News the validation of clicking on a link to any of their articles, but wow. Trump is quadrupling down on the jingoism, isn't he?
