The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What the hell, Trump? Trying to sound socially responsible now? The man clearly believes that politics is made up of sound bites. That may work on the campaign trail, but it's a lot different when you have to actually govern.

To almost no one's surprise, the NYT is reporting that the Planned Parenthood shooter was a big online fan of The Army Of God. Obviously a wee bit contrary to the many candidates claiming that he was just in the area and wasn't targeting the clinic.

Except it's not funny.

Cruz has now been quoted as saying, with regard to contraception, "Last I checked, we don't have a rubber shortage in America." There are no words.

Well that quote itself isn't wrong, near as I can tell. Condoms are certainly around. Along with a few other options. Is there some other part of the speech that's more objectionable?

[up][up][up] The amount of condoms a nation has in stock doesn't matter much if they don't teach kids (and grown-ups, sadly) to use them properly.

I legitimately don't see what the issue is with it. I don't always pick up on subtle shit so it's an honest question.

[up] Oh, I gotcha.

That's true. I'm of the abstinence bent on a personal level, but our sex ed classes in high school just went over the means, didn't really get into the particulars, besides some stuff like "condoms, don't keep them in your wallet. Also, pulling out doesn't always work.". That's more than a bit of a failing.

Well, first, the statement ignores female birth control entirely, which is quite a bit more expensive than condoms. It places the entire burden of birth control on the male partner, requiring the female to be abstinent if she doesn't want to place her (literal) future in the hands of the guy (literally and figuratively) screwing her.

An enormous amount of effort on the religious right is devoted to denying women any ability to become educated about or make choices regarding their sexuality, other than "abstain until marriage, then pump out kids". That this is a Neanderthal view of the world should be frankly obvious.

Planned Parenthood is an enterprise that is devoted primarily to women's reproductive health: sexual education, STD testing and treatment, birth control, pre-natal care, preventative care such as breast cancer and cervical exams, and of course abortion. Cruz wants it all burned down.

[up][up][up] "Should be obvious" and "is" doesn't always line up for some of us.

I see what you're getting at though.

If nothing else female contraception should be subsidized to cost about the same as condoms. Maybe tax condoms to make up the difference?

Or make it covered 100% by insurance. That's how it works today... if you have insurance (and if you are not so unlucky as to be a woman working for Hobby Lobby or a similar employer that has First Amendment exemptions).

Since i'm mostly familiar with local, European nutjobs, do religious pundits in America consider "waste of sperm" ( condoms, masturbations, oral sex, e.t.c...) to be sinful? As in, something similar to abortion (sperm = potential unborn babies = murder)?

Or is it just because condoms enable people to have a lots of sex unconcerned?

It depends on the church. The Catholic Church(of which I am a member) holds that sex is reproductive and that contraception is sinful. Masturbation is also seen as sinful for the same reason. Protestant and Evangelical churches seems to run the gambit of views on the matter(s).

[up][up][up] While I certainly would have no objections to making condoms completely free for everyone, they are cheap enough as it is that it's not a problem that anyone is concerned about. Access to them for young people can be a serious issue, though, as some jurisdictions age-restrict them. Yes, seriously. There are few better ways to ensure that a horny young guy will have unprotected sex than to require an adult to escort him to buy Trojans.

[up][up] The "waste of sperm" thing is certainly a belief that can be found out there, but nobody takes it seriously — even hardcore Republican nutjobs. Or perhaps particularly them, because they strongly believe in a patriarchal society in which it is a man's duty to "spread his seed", even as they preach about family values.

Generally, condoms are seen as sinful because they "promote promiscuity", not because of any silliness about millions of potential lives lost if you use one. I have no idea why masturbation is sinful, other than that you aren't supposed to be using your sexual parts for pleasure. "Sex is a chore, damn it, so stop liking it so much!"

Okay that's just stupid. Jersey they're legally required to give them to anyone.

And that's one thing I don't get with the condom hate. If they're having sex before marriage, not being allowed condoms isn't likely to stop them.

[up] Well, they aren't supposed to be having sex before marriage, you see. It all comes from there. Premarital sex is sinful, condoms (and other forms of contraception) "enable" premarital sex, so we won't let you have condoms, nor will we teach you about birth control, STD prevention, or indeed how sex works. "Girls'll tempt you, boys, so keep your dicks to yourselves." "Boys'll ravish you, girls, so dress proper and don't lead 'em on."

The teen moms that are the inevitable outcome of this stupidity are all whores and tramps, of course.

A particularly obnoxious subset, Quiverfull Christians, expressly believe that it is a woman's duty to bear as many Christians as possible to outbreed the infidel; others just say that children are a gift from God and you don't refuse gifts from God. (Catholics have their own theology on the subject, which can get complicated because there's a lot of separate arguments.)

Nobody says that contraception is murder - I don't think.

[up]The latter is entirely in keeping with their stated position, though. Boys and girls are both to keep their respective generative organs to themselves.

An argument that "teenagers shouldn't have sex, but they will anyway, so we should try to mitigate the damage by teaching them how to have sex safely" is about as mixed a message as one can send, and the only reason that liberals can get away with saying something like that is because it's the best that anyone can come up with. Saying that right-wing Christians should accept it is a little excessive (then again, they have a solution, but it's one that modern liberals won't accept...).

@Logo P: Nearly all anti-abortion groups believe that life starts during or after conception, not before. In fact, it's considered to be a strawman argument against said group.

However, religious groups might consider birth control and masturbation immoral for other reasons, depending on the church. For example, Catholics believe that the use of birth control is immoral (they believe that sex is for reproduction, and that reproduction should only come from sex).

I myself am a Protestant who believes that increased access to birth control helps prevent abortion, and is therefore good.
