Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

-walks in and sees Trump as point of conversation- Hey what about this.
As I linked before: polls right now are actually more predictable if you basically flip them around. The higher they were in the beggining, the less likely they will end up elected. Besides, "political science" is, scientifically, closely related to "guessing".
You could throw a bridal bouquet at the candidates and you will get a similar result.
I would go with statistics and history before succumbing to wanna be ideals of, for example "I think this year is different because people seem, like, really united!". A similar comment to that is "I think my Captain Crunch was really wanting me to eat it, because I saw a single pair of the crunchies melded together and I was like Wow! You REALLY want to get together into my stomach, huh?"
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesThe reason for Trump's strength is that, by and large, Republican primary voters are not very intelligent or strategic. Part of the reason the establishment wants Trump to get the hell out of the way is because they know that Trump is poison to the general election voters. He'd get a massive "Aw, HELL no!" from everyone who is not already firmly in the Republican camp. Hence their desire for Walker?...oops, no...Bush?...doesn't look it...Rubio? Someone like Romney from 2012, who had a fair amount of crossover appeal to Democrats as a high-quality Governor of Massachusetts, before he squandered all of that to win the base and made it clear what an empty suit he was.
Instead, Hillary will crush Trump, and honestly, I don't see Sanders as being much weaker than Hillary if he makes it to the general, assuming he can get his game on and get out of that damned economic ivory tower. I don't think that there's a lot of people who actually dislike Sanders outside of those who're already in the Republican camp.

Also, much of Trump's success (and Carson's, to an even greater degree) is that he's arguing against people who can't afford to overtly contradict him. So far, they've been able to make a lot of outrageous and easily debunked broad statements and crazy suggestions, and avoided being called out because none of the other Republican candidates dare to say something that can potentially make them seem pro-immigration, pro-gun control or anti-church, ect. ect. Put either of them in a debate with someone who's well organized and actively invested in contradicting them, and they'll get utterly humiliated.

To be honest, I don't know why Trump coming out as pro-torture would elict such a shock from people. Cheney, who was the VP of the United States for 4 years, openly admitted that he sees nothing wrong with it and he'd do it again, if need be.
And it's not like he was from a different party.
It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.I think it was the "well, even if it doesn't work, you know they probably deserve it" comment that came off as too vindictive for the less bloodthirsty people. After all, aren't we supposed to be the civilized ones?
Other Republicans make the effort of at least looking like they think it's a regrettable but necessary evil, because "it just works."
>>> I don't see Sanders as being much weaker than Hillary if he makes it to the general, assuming he can get his game on and get out of that damned economic ivory tower.
Just think of Sanders as a civ player who has made economy is primary strat.
I avoided Sanders vs BLM , because though I pretty much agree with Sanders ala it's the economy, stupid, it's also pretty damn tough to explain why it all boils down to haves vs have nots.
But, I recently got a crash course on just how fucked up the US economy is, so right now - I'm favoring Sanders more than Hillary. I still like Hillary at lot, but atm - I think Sanders would be more pigheaded about really fixing the US economy.
I feel sad that he can't fix Philippines economy.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. To continue that analogy, though, a player who focuses on economy and science still needs to understand the combat game and to have at least enough military forces available to deter invasion, and needs to be able to keep an eye on the diplomacy screen in case their enemies start buddying up.
Sanders needs to be able to show the voters that he can handle the President's military and foreign policy duties, as well as pushing his economic agenda. Hence, "getting out of his ivory tower."
...then again, Hillary has been going out of her way to piss off leftists lately by attacking Sanders' support for single-payer healthcare.

Sure he can! You guys just have to come back. Come on, we've got room on the flag

Or you could take "Pdt" and have it mean "Pathetic Donald Trump". That would be a great campaign slogan for his opponents in the presidency run.
