Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well I do not live in the U.S.
Then again, if Trump is elected it would mean a majority of the people in the U.S are for his stuff, something a Lee Oswald would not do...
Dangit. Can't we just put all of the U.S in the corner with no bacon if they do it?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
Does that mean we can dump our crazy people there again?
Okay guys, I'm as unnerved about the prospect of a Trump presidency as anyone else, but wishing for or requesting physical harm to befall actual real-life people is against forum policy.
Sorry, but I gotta play hall monitor on this. Don't make me get the teacher.
Trump is a problem that the GOP has created for itself. By wantonly disregarding facts in the pursuit of ideological purity, it has raised a generation of voters who are fact-immune and demand that the ideological purity be taken to its ultimate extreme.
They are reaping the insanity that they sowed, intentionally, in order to remain in power. I have some small sympathy for the poor, hoodwinked Republican voters. I have zero sympathy for the politicians who put themselves into the position of having to do what they want.
The problem, now, is that this craziness has taken over our political debate — even if Trump loses, as I hope he will, the GOP's voters have smelled blood and are in a frenzy. They won't let up until they have been crushed, and they'll divert their energy into winning regional elections, further distancing the Federal government from the states. The result will be total governmental paralysis until we're all swimming to work.
Also, this. Let's not root for Presidential assassinations or nuclear wars, tenk you veddy much.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Do any of you think about mandating Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates to resign-to-run? Like, in local and state races in FL you are mandated to do that sometimes. It is discussed here, on page 8 of the scanned booklet: http://dos.myflorida.com/media/695284/candidate-and-campaign-treasurer-handbook.pdf
. Might make them work harder. It might also sweep away those who aren't truly committed.
If Trump becomes president we work like hell to give him a Dem Congress or at least a Dem Senate.

anyone know why asscaps has that particular name?Trump has ticked off too many vital groups (Hispanics, women, moderates, liberals, sane people) who will definitely not vote for him in sufficient numbers (the GOP needs about 40-45% of the Hispanic vote to win over certain swing states, according to their own research) and will likely vote in droves to keep him out.
The crap he is spewing that might win him the primary (if the RNC doesn't manage to rally the voters behind an establishment candidate, or even settle for Carson) is going to make a general unwinnable for him barring a total Clinton/Sanders implosion or a turnout collapse. Not impossible but highly unlikely.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. As I said, it is not Trump's chances of winning the Presidency (zero without some kind of insane fraud) that are the problem here, but what winning the primary will mean to and about the Republican base. It will indicate a party that has completely escaped the control of its establishment — that can no longer field sensible national candidates... not that any of the current crop are "sensible", but at least most of them have some degree of political experience, some connection with the RNC, some degree of backing among the policy elite. They are people one might expect to run for the Presidency and have a decent shot at winning.
