Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A few ideologically motivated and/or memetically gullible folks did, like they always do.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh good, that means they won't vote for him. Despite their early friction with Bernie Sanders, I think we can safely add BLM to the list of American progressives who will not vote for Donald Trump.
He's already pissed off an entire gender and, of course, his entire campaign is built on sticking it to Hispanics. If he keeps burning bridges, maybe there won't be any left for him when elections finally do roll around.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I have trouble fathoming why anyone would ever vote for him in the first place, but I felt the same way about Bush II: The Revenge so I'm not taking chances.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.He doesn't have to get votes to do irreparable damage to the country.
The damage he's done to the political and cultural landscape is already enough. He's kicked a proper hornets nest of people who frankly should have been detained by the FBI a long time ago.
Expect more incidents like this. Expect more minorities getting executed by police in the street, more church burnings, more mass shootings, more domestic terror situations.
That's the mark he's gonna leave, not any piece of legislature about walls.

Oh really when?I've seen some people claim that Trump's appeal lies with an appearance of "straight talk". Or the ability to distill complicated problems into ones that can be seemingly solved with easy soundbites (that are more likely to cause catastrophic damage than anything). And then there's are those who want him elected do Judgement Day can be brought around "because humans are innately evil" (and that's why I'm so cynical about my fellow man).
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
Are you talking about The Illuminati?
Yep. Always assume incompetence and stupidity (in whatever form) over a Grand Conspiracy.

Keep Rolling OnWelcome to what I've discovered over years of studying Politics and International Relations, countries/the world aren't run by a grand evil conspiracy, but a motley collection of the stupid, the insane, the stupidly insane and the insanely stupid.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranYeah, that's pretty much my understanding too.
The fundamental flaw of any grand, organized NWO conspiracy theory is that it assumes that the world is not, in fact, a colossal clusterf*ck of chaos, fire, and nonsense. This assumption seems fundamentally incompatible with the state of reality.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I can't help but feel anyone spurred on by Trump would be likely to have done something like that independent of him anyway. I'm not sure how that's a mark he's going to leave.

No, I can see the logic for it. A lot of people have opinions but it's a rare and select few who can rally folks around those opinions. People who might otherwise have been content to sit in their home and just quietly hate red-heads can be spurred to action by a charismatic leader going, "Don't you all hate red-heads? Don't you wish we could do something about those cherry-topped bastards?! Let's go burn some homes!"
Believing something and being willing to make a stand for it are not necessarily the same thing. People become more brazen when they feel their controversial opinions are validated by the approval of others, especially people in a position of power.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.In which everyone — everyone — is a part of. After all, everybody's got an agenda. Or several.
Keep Rolling OnAlso it's possible that many such people wouldn't be meeting if it wasn't for Trump, if nothing else Trump rallies are probably a great networking opportunity for angry racists. Trump is helping move them from angry lone nuts (who might never do anything) to organised hate groups.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranHere the BLM story: 5 BLM protestors shot in Minneapolis, (none killed) by 3 white gunmen, apparently from a White Supremacist counter protest
Miski Noor, a representative for Black Lives Matter, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that a group of white supremacists had been showing up at the group's encampment for the past several nights. Noor told the newspaper that late Monday the group opened fire on demonstrators who tried to move them away from the protest area, hitting five people.
Minneapolis police confirmed on Twitter that five people sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police said they were looking for three white male suspects.
Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder later told NBC News that it was "way too early" in the investigation to weigh in on allegations that the gunmen were white supremacists.
One of the shooters was arrested.
Good, now catch the rest and throw the book at 'em.

Originally Goldwater was the fringe of the conservative/states rights anti-communist, anti-government "Everything was so much better before liberals ruined America with the New Deal" school. In 1964 he won a bitter Republicans primary as the primary voters abandoned moderation in favor of nominating a true believer who railed against the system. The result is one of the all time biggest defeats in presidential elections, as Lyndon B Johnson beat Goldwater 486 to 52 in the election, and a huge turnout came to make sure Goldwater didn't win and voted against every other Republican on the ticket too.
Unfortunately a fair amount of the youth and libertarian types were inspired by Goldwater and 16 years later formed the core of the Reagan Revolution, by which time Goldwater was left to impotently look on from the sidelines, especially as the Evangelical influence that Goldwater was opposed to crept into mainstream Republican politics.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

I thought the overwhelming domestic and international response to freedom fries was contemptuous laughter? I doubt many places (and no big chains) actually changed their menus.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
