Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's why I made the distinction of xenophobia being the main plank of the party, rather than a consequence of the other planks.
Say what you will about the Republicans, they haven't gotten to the point of The Golden Dawn party in Greece
, who's openly used the Nazi salute at rallies coupled with the slogan of "Clear the Filth".
In the words of John Oliver
- "Lest we forget - when Europe goes "far right", it goes "far right through Belgium."
Actually, that makes the GOP even more dangerous than our local nutjobs, in my opinion. The latter often act like the real life equivalent of a Card-Carrying Villain while the GOP seems to try to look comparatively sane. Emphasis on "comparatively".
To be honest, GOP is much more serious and respectable than Golden Dawn. It has a defined economic & foreign policy, for one. Their entire rhetoric doesn't revolve around "the leftists" or "teh immigrants". It has some reasonable, moderate minds (few as their are) within its ranks. It's not made up of neo-Nazis.
And, most important of all, it doesn't involve itself with organize crime like drug-running, pimping and arms dealing. Nor does it trace its roots to strip club bouncers & SA-wannabe thugs.
It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.
On the other hand the moderates are either enough of a minority or not a vocal enough majority that they don't seem to have any real say or impact in what the party does, which to me at least makes appealing to the fact they have moderates at all not mean a whole lot.

@Jack, I dunno if there's a complete list around since it's said that the documents he gave to them were in the tens of thousands, but along with a lot of info pertaining to Israel's enemies it included several lists/how-to's of soviet communications channels that the NSA were secretly monitoring, secret observations of military hardware and submarine movements, and documents detailing satellite observation capabilities of soviet missile sites. These were rather valuable to the Israelis as potential bargaining chips with the USSR (all according to one of the investigators; the really sensitive stuff is still classified to this day).
edit- @Charging him with treason, since he wasn't aiding a wartime enemy I don't think he could have been charged with it.

The GOP's defined economic and foreign policy is built around serving the white uber wealthy and only the white uber wealthy.
They've put a ton of effort in appearing as something remotely reasonable as opposed to the single minded ethnic purists that they are. That facade is starting to break down and people like Trump and Carson are leaking through.

Oh really when?
The fact that a Black guy and two Hispanics are doing fairly well, I think, disproves that they only care about white people.
Not really. All of their policies are built around helping a very specific group of people. That isn't an accident.
And having token minorities around to deflect accusations of racism is a very common thing. The GOP has spent a lot of time and money making a seemingly reasonable image for themselves.
Oh really when?Pollard was an intelligence analyst for the US Navy (IIRC) who passed along tons of classified documents to the Israelis, supposedly at such a fast pace that the Israelis had to install a special high capacity copy machine to be able to copy it all. He got caught in the mid 80s, after, according to him, having passed along enough information to fill a 6x6x6 room from floor to ceiling. He plead guilty and basically from the moment he did Israeli PMs and various pro-Israel groups have been working and lobbying for his release. Obama finally let him out instead of letting him serve out life as a little bone thrown to Israel so they'd sit down and shut up over the Iran deal.
And as he was a US citizen, he easily could have been hit with treason for his actions. Quite rightly.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Not really, seeing as the black guy and the two Hispanics only really care about white people.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThe thing with the US system is that two parties generally means that anyone who wants to get ahead politically has to sign up as "left-wing" or "right-wing." Third parties exist on both ends of the spectrum, but generally are reserved for nutters or people who only care about their ideology at the expense of actually getting elected.
That means that our Democrats has everyone from, say, Jim Webb or people similar to Tony Blair's ideology all the way to folks who wear Che Guevara shirts unironically. Our Republicans have people ranging from, say, Poland's Civic Platform to dedicated Klansmen and in between.
Pollard always portrayed himself as an alienated Jewish-American who felt he had a duty to help Israel. Of course the fact that he had money problems, was paid quite well and at least tried (and probably succeed) to sell info to other nations other than America's "best friend" (snickers) puts serious doubt on this sob story.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Former Sec of State Connie Rice took shots at the Republican candidates
over the refugee situation.
On Monday, Rice appeared with Alabama Governor Robert Bentley in Birmingham at the SEUS Japan 38, a conference that occurs annually in the state.
The day before the conference, Bentley announced that his state would refuse to take any Syrian refugees, becoming one of the many Republican governors to show their lack of compassion toward human beings who were forced to flee their home country due to terrorism and civil war.
But rather than join the chorus of hate, Rice took a shot at Republicans while Bentley sat a few feet away.
“I fundamentally understand that you in a position of authority, like you governor and others, in addition to having compassion for others you have to be safety conscious for your people,” Rice said before pointing out that the Bush Administration actually took in tens of thousands of refugees over her four years of service as Secretary of State. “Generally under those circumstances we have been able to manage the flow but that has been 75,000 people a year at its height. But now we are facing hundreds of thousands.”
She also saw fit to explain American values to Bentley:
“What the United States has done is to be open to people who are fleeing tyranny, who are fleeing danger, but we have done it in a very careful way that has worked for us.”
Indeed, the United States has had a really open refugee system since after World War II. During that war, bigots also opposed granting asylum to Jewish refugees, and millions died in the Holocaust. We could have saved thousands of lives but we let anti-Semitism and xenophobia dictate our refugee policy, therefore making the Holocaust part of our own national shame, which is why we changed our policy.
Rice also took a shot at Republicans who have suggested that we place Syrian refugees in camps, which would be reminiscent of the internment camps where Japanese-Americans were placed out of fear during World War II.
“I think we are going to have to vet very carefully,” Rice said. “We will have to relocate people instead of keeping them in camps which turns out to be a disaster.”
It’s good to know that many Republicans do not agree with their own party when it comes to refugees, and it’s great to see a high profile Republican like Rice declare that the United States should continue to be a safe place for those who seek to escape tyranny and certain death. Hopefully, this will inspire other Republicans to speak out on behalf of those innocent men, women, and children from Syria who just want to live in peace.

An Israeli agent who was spying on the United States.
He's being hailed as a hero in Israel right now. We're just discussing the fact that if he wasn't Israeli he'd probably be another living corpse in Gitmo.
