Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Why? I mean it's our primary way of determining how harmful an attack was, how is it not relevant?
Yeah no, otherwise they'd be using nukes, ballistic missiles, airplanes or tanks. They can't find those means because we've successfully limited to access to said means. British street gangs use knives instead of the handguns that their American counterparts use, that's not because they don't want handguns, it's because they can't get them.
Sure they can acquire a means, but that's not reason not to try, I think a lot of people would be a lot happier today if the news was covering how 5 ISIS members tried to stage a knife attack in central Paris and got the crap kicked out of them.
Why does this apply only to guns? I'm sure the Paris attackers really wanted a tank, but they couldn't get one, why does the logic that stopped them getting a tank not apply to stopping them getting guns?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranRe-reminder that there's a Dem debate on CBS tonight in about one hour at 9 EST, a timeslot and day when a minimum number of people are likely to watch. In the case of tanks and nukes, it doesn't actually matter if they're legal or not-it'll be hard for criminals to acquire them because they're expensive as hell.

Leviticus 19:34They're hitting her with another "Hillary isn't genuine/is a liar" angle on a story she apparently tells about going to a recruiter when she was 26. The thing that bugs me with Schultz's take on it is that she seems to be saying that the facts of a story don't matter nearly so much as the message it conveys. It seems like a short leap from that to "the democratic process doesn't matter nearly so much as the candidates we elect." I don't know about Clinton, but I like Schultz less and less. http://tinyurl.com/ns6tka5

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."When you let opponents of the debate (not people advocating for one side or the other of the issue, but people opposed to discussing the issue at all) decide when it's appropriate to bring up the subject, then the subject will never be brought up, ever.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.I mean in this situation there's an official period of morning, plus it's pretty shitty of international actors to use this shit for their domestic audiences anyway.
But yeah in general the only real hard limit is the "there are literally still people being shot at/held hostage right now" one.

I'm pretty sure this article was paid for by the Clinton campaign. She looks so dam smug in that photo.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyAnd Bill O'Reilly once said on his show that he would handle the occupation of Iraq by running Iraq exactly Saddam Hussein did, and going by how popular Bill has been with conservatives, we can therefore assume that every single person in the country who is a conservative is in favor of mass murder, torture, and rape.
Or you know, we could not overblow the opinions of one or two people and make gross generalizations about huge sections of the population. Always worth considering.

Dwight Eisenhower was such a commie. Also does anyone else think they cut to commercials when the other candidates start to distinguish themselves, this current debate session seemed really short.
-Oh man Clinton was getting clobbered on the minimum wage. So of course they cut to commercial.
-Last commercial break their was a commercial from Walmart workers, now Walmart itself puts in an add, nothing captures how conflicted the Democrats are.
-Clinton responds to questioning of her campaign finances, by brining up 9/11, smooth, especially when she never really did much for the state then.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.O'Malley hasn't gone after Sanders nearly as much as Clinton. Think he's angling for a Sanders VP position?
Oop, never mind. Sanders definitely flubbed the first gun control question, and O'Malley pounced.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."This moment by moment commentary means absolutely nothing if you don't give context. Since, you know, not all of us are watching the debate or might come in at a later time.
I thought about watching the debates, but I've had too long a day after a sleepless night, and I doubt it'd change my mind anyway.

The thing with guns is that yes criminals will get them if they really want them but I can guarantee you that almost every gun used in almost every crime in the United States was a some point legally purchased in this country.
You buy it legally, hand it to someone else who files them numbers off, who then sells it to the bad guy.
Oh really when?
