Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Would you like it to be a thing? 'Cuz I'm itching to issue an off-topic thump.
Obama's on TV right now and has confirmed the rejection of Keystone. He says that it's been a huge distraction for both sides, and simply won't do enough to create jobs or boost the U.S. economy compared to other things that we could be working on. It wouldn't lower gas prices or help with our infrastructure deficiencies, nor would it increase energy security.
Obama is using this announcement as an opportunity to discuss energy policy, citing America's overachievement of its goals on reducing oil imports as well as huge reductions in costs for clean energy, increases in fuel efficiency, and reduction in overall carbon emissions.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Basically, CNN wasn't able to verify other stuff from Carson's past, including a school stabbing his classmates said they would of been able to know since it should of been a major school incident, but there's no proof it happened. Carson's standing by his possibly fabricated past as it's the entire basis of his book series that paints him to Conservatives and Blacks as the "Violent Black youth who took responsibility and bootstrapped himself out of poverty.".
Dude gonna get Cain'd.
It's always been only a matter of time until he got Cain'd, but it's always surprising when it finally happens. Of course, he might survive it, depending on how crazy his supporters are.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"They may not be so much crazy as desperate. The ones I've listened to at work spoke of a need for leadership in the party and that "we're going to have to go with Carson." It wasn't said with passion.

And probably quite a few Republicans know it as well — maybe a chance for the Democrats?
Keep Rolling OnGiven the situation, it seems the better comparison would be the Brian Williams meme.
And in other news, a number of liberal news outlets are suspicious as hell of the fact that Matt Bevin won the Kentucky Governorship
.
This is primarily because of three things - A) he was behind by 3 points in the last preceding polls, B) he won by 9 points when they were tallied up, and C) the other Democrats on the ballot did much better than the candidate for Governor.

Hmm, if they prove some kind of shenanigans about the Kentucky race, that could be one hell of a scandal to take into 2016.
- She did something every other Secretary of State has done because of the State Department's shit ass budget.
- She made a false declaration on Bengzhai that the rest of the administration did due to a confusion in two simultaneous events.
- Her husband got a blow job from a 20 something woman.
- Vague ominous real estate conspiracy that's been dragged around to death.
O'Malley seems to have been torpedoed by Baltimore already.
And if Sanders has scandals, they're not showing up. (Yet)

You know, the more I think about it, the more the Republicans seem like one big Hive Of Scum And Villainy, or at least a secret evil organization that's not so secret. (At all.) I realize of course that things are likely more complicated than the news makes them out to be, but I've yet to see a running republican who truly seems to have the best interests of the wider American populace at heart, as opposed to the various racists, crazies, and 1% that they seem to cater to.

The thing with Kentucky could be that the state Democrats and the national Democrats are almost two different entities to them (symptoms of the Southern Strategy still not swinging to utter completion). GOP ads in the state managed to link Conway with Obama and the ever-fallacious "War on Coal," so it could be that conservative registered Dems voted for fellow party members downticket but nuked Conway because of the campaign's successful ability to link him to Obama.
Which puts into better perspective why the woman who ran against Mitch McConnell was so cagey about whether she had voted for him or not.
Baltimore aside, it's not clear that O'Malley ever enjoyed the kind of national recognition he needed to be competitive in the race.

Double Post: Remember the other day when TransCanada asked the State Department to suspend their application to build the Keystone XL pipeline, presumably with the idea that they could resubmit if a Republican won the presidency in 2016? Well, that seems not to have worked, or have been a desperate, last-ditch effort to avoid a total defeat.
Yesterday, the White House signaled that it would reject the company's request to put the application on hold, citing seven years of work on the project that should not be thrown out. Today, John Kerry has recommended that the U.S. reject Keystone
, spelling almost certain doom for it. Barack Obama will speak on the topic at 11:45 AM ET and is widely expected to confirm the rejection.
All the environmental activists who had been waiting with bated breath since TransCanada's unexpected announcement may finally be able to celebrate victory.
In other news, Ben Carson's campaign admits that his story about his application and acceptance to West Point was made up.
Carson's book, Gifted Hands, contains a heartwarming tale of being introduced to Gen. William Westmoreland in 1969, followed by receiving a full scholarship to the military academy. West Point, however, has maintained that it has no record of Carson applying or being admitted.
I wonder if this lie will finally start to knock his campaign off its pedestal.
