Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Dagnabbit. My boy keeps wearin' those polka dot pajamas! Back in my day, the presiden' always wore stripes!
And presidents these days giving speeches on TV and zippin' around on their limos. Back in my day we had to walk to places to give speeches barefoot in the snow both ways. And we liked it that way!"

Yes you are, Obama apparently missed even more votes during his days as a Senator. It helped him to, his lack of a voting record meant their were no controversial votes to pin him to.

He said Cheney was building his own empire and not being the same person he was when he served Bush, he attributes this to 9/11. Still, he says he is a "good man." I think we talked about it a few pages back. Oh and Bush is apparently a lot more critical of Rumsfeld.
Here's an article on the topic
Apparently Bush and Rumsfeld were rivals all the way back to the Ford administration.
In a surprise twist the TTP does Unions good
In Vietnam. The Communist party has agreed to US demands to allow workers to form unions and strike. Their is a New York Times article that goes into greater detail on the subject, but I have been unable to track it down.
And while we are on the subject of the US and Vietnam
Frontline has released a piece investigating murders conducted by a group of South Vietnamese soldiers called "The Front", who continued to plot the overthrow of the Communist government decades after the war ended, and were almost certainly aided by at the very least rouge elements of the CIA, DOD, and other such organizations.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. It's advertising for them. They need all kinds of people, and they need them badly. What a better way than to sponsor a salute to the troops at an NFL game, then teenagers in the audience could look on and see the, apparently voluntary, respect and admiration these people get, and want to sign up to get some of that (along with other benefits, etc).
The only cynical part about it is that they make it look voluntary, otherwise it's no different than "America's Navy: A Global Force for Good" commercials.
Ben Carson believes pyramids store grain.
Wut. Someone's been playing too much Civ.

The top 5 isn't (too) scary - cause we've got Clinton and Sanders and Clinton's in first place.
But the top 10 only has 2 Democrats and 1 independent.
Come on, Bernie. Get to third place please.

That Carson is a creationist doesn't bother me (even though I'm a theistic evolutionist myself). Half my family's creationists, and I don't consider them to be unintelligent or crazy.
Leviticus 19:34Being good at a thing and having bizarre personal beliefs tends to happen.
See most of your favorite actors and singers, they might be wunderkinds at acting and music, but you have Anti-Vaxxers, guys who think wet wipes can replace showers, or that humans are a scourge against mother nature and we need to stop helping Africa.
It's entirely possible to be a neurosurgeon and think dinosaurs and men lived at the same time and that the Pyramids are grain silos.
Cognitive Dissonance reigns supreme.
I'm simply saying Carson's a hardcore religious type who believes strongly in his feelings.

Given the north Vietnamese spent the entire war doing the same thing on a larger scale, I'm not sure they should have expected anything else.
I'm baaaaaaack
Still doesn't excuse them committing murders on US soil, nor does it excuse elements of the US government from supporting them. Still, do not mistake my sharing this for sympathy for the North Vietnamese, or even lack of sympathy with the South. South Vietnam was, from my understanding, much more than just an American puppet state, and the very fact that people are still willing to go so far for it proves it was not as bankrupt an idea as people say. Hell I can even excuse US officials for backing the Front if they had not known about the murders on US soil, many of those people were probably their friends and I'm sure that even beyond Cold War ruthlessness, their was a sense of obligation to those people.
Jack, regarding your earlier post, it's "TPP" — Trans-Pacific Partnership. There is no such thing as "TTP".
Next week's GOP debate will have some notable absences
: Due to some odd poll selection choices by Fox Business, Chris Christie and Mike Huckabee have been relegated to the kiddie table. Lindsey Graham and George Pataki won't even get to sit with the babies; they are out. While I have no love for either of them, I do have to wonder whether Fox thinks it is the arbiter of the primary, rather than the RNC or the voters.
Oh, and Rachel Maddow will be hosting a forum for the Democratic candidates tonight. It's not a debate, since they won't be permitted to rebut each others' statements; rather, each will get a period of time to answer questions submitted to MSNBC by ordinary people.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I know the forum was mentioned already, but I'm reminding everyone.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

If he starts to build a gigantic corporate tower in a reclaimed Louisiana bayou, I'm going to be very worried. That's all I'm saying.
