Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Humorous" look at the Presidential candidates from the local weekly paper: http://tinyurl.com/oz89xyt
That's about what happened. And having funds to operate was an issue Teeechnicaly this only affects the media arm of Nat Geo (which also includes a couple cable networks) and not the nonprofit National Geographic Society. But the whole thing still stinks of, well, Murdoch.
What I do know is that WSJ has taken to running more anti-science and/or anti global-warming pieces after their buyout. Having the credibility of the brand (both of them) is in and of itself a big shame.

In fact, when it comes to Rupert Murdoch and journalism, there's a thread that might be worth renaming and necroing: Murdoch's newspaper under investigation in Britain
Bush 41 disses Cheny and Rumsfeld in new biography.
I think he doesn't go far enough, he still calls Cheney a good man, but then again he actually new the guy so who the hell knows maybe Dick Cheney is secretly some kind of Saint
.
Rupert Murdoch will turn into Felix Jongleur...

Well I'll mostly restrict it to linking a source article
, adding that a lot of the layoffs were key positions and that while I realize that journalism isn't horribly profitable, especially at the level of quality that Nat Geo is known for, I kinda hope some other billionaire can scoop up either the stock or some of the ex-staff in a new organization as a matter of philanthropy. If Nat Geo goes under or goes partisan, the world will be poorer for it.
