Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Indeed the virtuous poor do tend to have similarities to the person making the distinction, but to be fair many group rednecks as part of the unvirtous poor, although I have observed this phenomenon amongst people I know, e.g mostly Northerners, so one could argue that they are still looking down on people who are not of their "group."
I think he's referring more to the guys who said that it's great that the old America is leaving, rather to the Presidential candidates themselves.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. That "the poor are lazy" mindset is not just within the gop, though my mindset is more of "the poor need more help in self-control and discipline".
I would label my position on welfare as "conditional".
For example, if I keep in mind that there's a direct link between eating too much and healthcare costs, I would prefer that people on welfare have very strict diets.
But on the other hand, I would also advocate for 100% free libraries and internet at reasonable speeds and tablets capable enough for browsing.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.
The problem is their is no one defend group as "the poor."
Edit: Some are struggling to keep their house, others don't have a house. Some are just kids who have been disowned by their families for the "crime" of being gay. And some are complete pieces of shit who abuse themselves and the people in their lives, and "deserve"everything they are getting. Some are lazy, and some try scheme after scheme to lift themselves up, and fail each time. But above all they are people, and deserve to be treated as such, instead of some gigantic inhuman mass we call "the poor."

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Bernie is left by US standards, his stances over state control of private affairs and the economy still land him squarely on the right wing spectrum.
Also social progress and social welfare aren't inherently leftist, after all environmentalism which is now considered a leftist policy was once a right wing capitalist luxury by leftist and socialistic countries, namely the Soviet Union.
If you guys want to see leftists just take a look at South America and how much state control over it brings.
Inter arma enim silent legeswe're talking about making changes to the system, not completely replacing it. changing cultural attitudes is also something that doesn't necessarily involve changing how the government works, although one helps the other.

I am not seeing how Sanders's economy policy could possibly considered be right wing. Also, federalism outside of the US is not generally considered a left-right thing, but social welfare and social progress most definitively are.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI recall hearing that a Chinese embassy official once tried donating to a Democratic party fundraiser, although the donation was refused. That was a long time ago though, so my memory of the affair is very hazy...
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotHow about this. I'll pay you 1000 dollars now. Every year, you pay me 200 dollars, if the CCP hasn't picked the president. If it picks the president within the next five years, you've broken even. Sound good?
What frustrates me is people making statements of absolute certainty, but there's no weight behind it, so there's no consequences of being wrong.

Coders aren't a service industry. I mean, you hire labor to produce something, but that's not the definition of service. I mean things where, you need someone physically there to serve the customer directly. And as for coding, a lot of that is due to offshoring not robots.
