The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]Bush senior was fine. Jeb in practice is fine. Neither have the charisma of W, but in return, W isn't quite as good as they are.

(Vox) The President flips on Standardized Tests, and says the country needs less standardized testing finally.

(Politico) Republican presidential campaigns are planning to gather in Washington, D.C., on Sunday evening to plot how to alter their party’s messy debate process

... and how to remove power from the hands of the Republican National Committee. (And the RNC isn't invited)

...

“I think the bigger frustration you saw is that all those candidates onstage had prepared for a substantive debate. Everyone was ready to talk about trade policy and the debt and tax policies,” Rubio said on Fox News. “And we’re ready for that, everybody was. And then, you got questions that everyone got, which were clearly designed to get us to fight against each other or get us to say something embarrassing about us and then get us to react.”

(Mother Jones) According to Google Trends, it was Donald Trump and Ben Carson who people were following and googling the most about. And online polls say the Donald was the winner, not Rubio.

(Balloon Juice) Powerpoint Presentation of the Darned

Jeb Bush, post debate, takes shots at Rubio, up to and including calling Rubio the "GOP Obama".

The Politico one I think is, in particular, rather telling, about the state of the GOP with regards to how they react to Truth vs Truthiness.

If Rubio is the GOP Obama, then that makes Jeb the GOP Clinton, and Rubio's going to be the darkhorse candidate that steals the nomination.

Jeb's not very good at thinking things through, is he?

I don't think Jeb particularly cares to be honest.

I was wondering while listening to NPR this afternoon: are there any Democrats who just couldn't fly in the general, like Trump or Carson who would completely collapse in the general?

As much as it pains me to say it, probably Sanders. The good news is that if Trump or Carson ends up getting the nomination, he would win. If they put Rubio through, on the other hand...

My mom was saying the same thing about Sanders. I still think he's more electable than almost all the GOP candidates, but I'm biased and the jack-o'lantern I helped carve yesterday is more electable than most of the GOP candidates.

On the plus side if Clinton gets the nomination, which seems very likely, I think she has a good chance of winning the general.

I'm not convinced Sanders would have problems getting elected, but I do think he's probably the chanciest potential nominee.

If you want a president who will solve the real problems in our government, preserve American values, and help build a better future with you...Well, too bad. I'm not running.

(Which is probably what Biden should have said)

Freedom of conscience, an enterprising spirit, and innate hostility to those who would impose on such qualities in others should be the American values. Everything else would be conditional.

I suppose this is a cultural question, but what I identify as "American Values" are primarily the enterprising spirit and judging people by their merit rather than traits such as race.

Don't feel bad, for all the shit other countries say about the US, the enterprising and the "nothing is impossible if you try attitude" are considered the best American traits that other countries should adopt.

I'd almost rather see Sanders get the nomination just to see how the nation would react to an actual left-wing candidate. Sure, the GOP will dogpile on him as a pinko commie socialist, but they'll do that regardless of who the Democratic nominee is — and with Clinton, they've got decades worth of scandals (of varying levels of artificial-ness) to dredge up, whereas Sanders is relatively new on the national stage.

I think gives-no-fucks Obama has shown that the country is ready to get behind a candidate that's more actively left-leaning. The Democratic base is fed up with Republican stonewalling, and I think they'd support a President that positioned themselves not just as a moderate, but as a liberal.

Of course, the stakes are pretty high. If the Republican party wins the presidency, then they're likely to control all three branches of government. But I feel like if the Democrats are going to go for it, now's the time, when the Republican side has managed to alienate their moderate supporters so damn badly anyway.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

Maybe only slightly relevant to this discussion, but the prospect of the GOP controlling all three branches reminded me of this article. Gotta love plain-talking bankers.

If Sanders loses the nomination, Ryan says he’s considering bypassing Hillary Clinton, whom he disdains as much as her husband, for the nuclear option. “I might just want to see some Republican run it and let the shithouse burn down.”

I really hate this defeatist attitude you guys all seem to have about Sanders, because its basically a self-fulfilling-prophecy

Believe me, I badly want Sanders to be President. The reason I'm a pessimist is because if I go in expecting the best and get the worst I'll be devastated.

Well, considering that some of us in this thread genuinely prefer Clinton over Sanders, it's not exactly defeatist.

Also, just giving what we think is a realistic guess of a particular person's chances is not in itself defeatist or a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Bernie has given a good enough showing in the primary that I'm less certain he'll lose the nomination than I was before, but I still think the math is against him.

As for the presidency itself, I think he has a decent chance of winning if his campaign keeps itself in order. He needs to draw on the entire power of the democratic party.
