The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Honestly, Kasich's saltiness is kind of warranted seeing as he seems to be the Only Sane Man among Republican Presidential hopefuls right now.

True. Of course, Trump did an ad hominem on him.

Also, hearing the applause...oh christ Rubio's getting the nomination isn't he.

Yeah, Rubio has basically been the presumed nominee by people who assume Carson/Trump are just the new Herman Caines, and think that establishment Jeb doesn't have the likability he needs.

The fact that none of these people are likely to win the general.

I dunno, the Republicans are still at war with each other? I'm already nervous. If Trump or Carson wins the nomination I'll start panicking.

[up][up] Given the general turn of the tide against Clinton and the fact that Sanders has absolutely no chance, I'm not convinced.

Even Clinton could beat most of the current field. Once the general comes around, a lot more people actually start paying attention.

[up][up][up]You need the Latino vote to win the White House, unless Democratic voters stay at home en masse. Trump and Carson aren't taking certain swing states because of their immigration stances. Seriously, their disapproval numbers among Dems and Independents is staggering. Clinton or Sanders will win against Trump or Carson by virtue of being sane, this GOP circus is doing more for voter registration numbers than any amount of community engagement ever did.

It's a lot easier to get people to vote against something, if they are motivated enough.

Even Sanders could beat most of the current field, the "Anyone but Donald Trump" vote is going to be huge, so if Trump or any of the similar candidates win the nomination then the Dems pretty much have a lock.

The tide is turning against Clinton? Since when? I thought she was still riding high from the gift Republicans gave her over the ridiculousness that was the Benghazi hearings?

ILoveDogs Since: May, 2010
#103990: Oct 28th 2015 at 7:03:58 PM

But it's not going to be Trump or Carson, will it? It'll be Bush or Rubio or one of the ones who pretends to be sane. And if they get Clinton they'll scream "BENGHAZI" or "E-MAILS" til they win, and if they get Sanders, they'll scream "COMMUNIST" until they win.

Mopman43 Since: Nov, 2013

Would that really work? I'd say most of the country is more than tired of Benghazi by this time; they've been harping on it for, what? 2, 3 years?

Except none of those things will make them win. The Republicans have been screaming everything and anything (including "COMMUNIST") at Obama for years, and it's gotten them nowhere.

[up]True (not like that ever stopped them), but they've already been attacking Clinton and Sanders for a while now, and it doesn't seem to be working.

Honestly, I'm not sure if a Democratic candidate can lose, short of a massive scandal or demographic shift, because the bases seem just as solid if not more than they did in the previous two elections. But maybe I'm underestimating the swing states.

Understandable, but I don't think Sanders (or Clinton) could lose Democratic voters in the same way that Trump could lose Republican voters.

Yeah, the numbers don't really favor a Republican victory at the presidential level.

As for Clinton re: Benghazi, the recent hearings have so far shown to be a massive boost to her polling in Iowa. Basically, any concerns people had over it were put to rest, with Republicans making themselves look like fools, and making Clinton look remarkably durable.

You are a pessimist. Mathematically it's nearly impossible for the Republicans to get the 270 electoral votes they need to win the presidency, even without a crazy asshole like Trump or Carson who will mobilize the hell out of the Democratic base to make sure they never reach the Oval Office.

Calm down, Chicken Littles. The sky isn't falling. (And what good is screaming about Benghazi or emails going to do when Republicans have flat out admitted it was an attempt to get to Clinton? Yeesh, some people panic over everything.)

Edit: Also, I think the Republicans have forever neutralized the power of the words Socialism and Socialist by applying it to Obama, who really doesn't fit the term. (Hell, most of Obama's positions are Republican positions from a couple of decades ago.) They screamed it until it's robbed a lot of the power from the word, and actual socialists like Bernie would like to thank Republicans for that.

It's not enough to achieve a victory in the Presidential election. We need the Senate at a minimum and, ideally, the House. The latter is almost impossible but Sanders has shown an astonishing ability to get interest from normally apathetic people.

Anyway, of what I've seen Rubio's won.
