The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What really worries me about Trump vs. Carson is that Trump has been losing ground over his apparent willingness to say a few sane things amid all the craziness, such as his declaration that the Iraq war was a mistake. The rabid base wants all the crazy they can get their hands on.

If either of them — but especially Carson — continues to lead into the primary votes themselves, the establishment will tear the GOP apart trying to take them down. If the establishment fails... we are in deep shit.

Why especially Carson? How does he scare the establishment?

[up][up]Yes.

[up][up][up][up]That said, it's not the end of the world if Trump or Carson is nominated - only if they're elected. If they're nominated, and then promptly fall face-first into Hell No, then we get a return to my prediction - a Democratic Party that stays united to oppose a Republican Party in permanent opposition.

[up][up]Because he's managed to make himself appear far less insane and more presentable to the masses than Trump despite being much much worse.

How is dying of sudden decapitation worse than dying of sudden bisection?

Question is, who cares! They are pretty awful ways to go and you will die anyways!

I don't think he would stand for being secretary of anything.

Among other things, Carson wants to repurpose the Department of Education from its current role of setting educational standards to a new role of spying on teachers to make sure they don't get "too radical", by which he means "too liberal".

That you even have to ask how Carson is worse than Trump shows just how dangerous he is.

He's managed to somehow present himself as the sane option despite being what is possibly the most extreme politician the Republicans have.

In a general election, the Democrats would spare no expense in playing all of Carson's crazy assertions 24/7. I'm not sure how well that would work in the primaries, though, since a good chunk of the people who have said they would support him appear to be completely ignoring his actual positions, and the other candidates can't come down on his ideas too hard lest they alienate the people who do support them.

Ironically, Trump might be the only candidate who can afford to call him out.

If Carson gets in, the racial politics of it are going to be head-spinning, with the GOP running hard on the "Dems are the real racists" line, to a fair bit of accusations of Uncle Tomfoolery either from black social justice activists or other Democrats, which could hurt in their own way.

The Internet seems to be trying to turn me against Republicans!

...well I was already against Republicans, but all this stuff isn't moving me closer.

For a while I thought that Carson was the saner alternative to Trump, but if all those things he says are true...

Is it just that I'm so young that I grew up so liberal?

Or maybe it was from watching TV way more than going to church.

So we either get the crazy yahoo who wants to get rid of all Hispanic people and replace them with underprivileged black kids or the crazy yahoo who considers abortion-seeking women to be slave owners, proponents of gun control to be literal Nazis, and wants Congress to be able to remove Supreme Court Justices from power for voting in favor of gay rights.

I honestly don't know which yahoo is worse. I never thought I would say this about a non-Trump candidate but Ben Carson is failing miserably at fulfilling my "Not Donald Trump" criteria.

Well, Carson has a slow, quiet demeanour. He looks sane. Then, the things that come out of his mouth.

Trump, on the other hand, speaks and carries himself in an openly loony way.

EDIT: OH GOD! I READ THAT THING! CARSON IS INSANE!

It's rather sad, but the media have interviewed people who say they support Republican candidates, telling them about those candidates' avowed positions and asking if they believe them. A startling number of respondents do not know their candidate's positions, and, when told, often disbelieve them as propaganda.

Getting voters to understand the actual issues before them is mind-bogglingly difficult. That is why sound bites and talking points are so powerful: you have about fifteen seconds to capture someone's attention in politics.

It IS possible to be right-wing and not sound crazy, right?

Like mellow things. Saying that marriage should only be between a man and a woman (it shouldn't), that women shouldn't have abortions (they shouldn't have to, but they should be allowed to), and that America should be able to send troops overseas (I'd just rather they not need to).

But the point about being conservative is doing what other (typically conservative) presidents have already done.

Doesnt matter if Trump or Carson loses really.

The more attention and influence they are allowed to get the more emboldened the demographic that supports them gets and that is so very dangerous.

Those people have done enough damage and misery already.
