Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Hopping in with a remark on something a couple days old:
And an online game has a similarly motivated faction as one of its enemies. On the other hand, I find their idea of a militant left-wing equivalent utterly laughable.
The Left does have a militant fringe, though it is much more fringe in the current political atmosphere than the militant rightist fringe. Any time a WTO or G8 or similar conference is in town there tends to be a sizable number of anti-corporate and/or anti-globalization protesters and occasionally a few outright vandals who have busted the windows of Starbucks and the like. There have been serious police clashes at some of these events (including tear gas assaults on the peaceful but refuse-to-stand-asside-when-ordered body of the protests.) I saw a lot more of them when I went to a liberal arts school that was very much so in multiple senses of the word (particularly near the start of the Iraq war). Friend of mine at the time who was big on photography/documentary went with a group to DC at one point for an anti-war protest.
I don't deny that left-wing militants exist, I just found that game's particular interpretation to be bizarre, especially with how it's based on an extension of contemporary politics.
We don't really see current liberal issues like student debt or health care motivating people to arm themselves, instead choosing to influence/change/work with "the system." In contrast, we have seen current conservative issues motivate people to arm themselves, in order to fight "the system."
Could that change? Sure. But right now it seems much more unrealistic than its supposed "equivalent."
It struck me as similar to the "leet haxor" faction in Alpha Centauri, which is hardly the basis for a nation-state.

I'm guessing by the description that it might have at least been partly inspired by Occupy? In our universe it didn't amount to a lot, but make the conditions for protest a lot more dire (which the game plot supposes, the system to "work within" apparently breaking down) and have it go a lot longer and it would at least attract that fringe. The majority of the movement would not like it and I don't know if it would take over like in the game but it's not a nonzero chance.

Obama has just compared the Republican party to Grumpy Cat.
I never thought he would stoop so low. I mean, insulting a cat like that? Come on...
Memetic Mutation has come to such point where the politicians themselves are using them instead of just their voter base.
I wonder if Bush and Obama go online just to see the people posting about them.
Inter arma enim silent legesWorld-wide, the radical left went a bit out of style when the Berlin wall fell.
In the US? What group opposes the system depends on who's running the system. When a democrat enters office, the right becomes the counterculture. When a republican enters office, the left becomes the counterculture.
Leviticus 19:34Donald Trump said he would consider closing certain US mosques to fight ISIS
Asked on Fox Business Network if the United States should take action to close certain mosques as part of the fight against the Islamic State, as has happened in Britain, Mr. Trump said, “I would do that, absolutely.”
Mr. Trump then said that he was not sure about the legality of closing mosques, but that it was certainly something that should be looked at.
“It depends if the mosque is, you know, loaded for bear,” he said.
Muslims have taken offense to remarks from Mr. Trump and Ben Carson, one of his leading rivals for the nomination, who said he did not think a follower of Islam should be president.
For his part, Mr. Trump has said he is concerned about religious extremists, not Muslims generally.
“I love the Muslims,” he said in September. “I think they’re great people.”
Huh, I just read (it was a tumblr post) Biff Tannen was based off of Trump.

I would support closing Mosques or any religious or political place that funds or recruits for terrorist groups. However since this is Donald Trump, it will almost certainly be taken to mean, "any Mosque with an Iman that preaches against Donald Trump", which will be all of them,or all of them with an Iman with the courage to call Trump what he is. Donald Trump should not be given that power, or any power really.
And the US's new approval rating are out.
It seems like they have really gone up since I last looked at these kinds of polls, with the highest, the Philippines, being at 92 percent approval, and the lowest, Jordan, being at 14 percent, which as I recall is pretty high for Jordan.

No he doesn't. Where's the Natalism? The Futurism? The need for a United Nation Marching In Lockstep? The sense of National Destiny? Trump is autocratic, egocentric, demagogic, and dictatorial, but that doesn't make him a Fascist.

This means Jeb's circling the drain now too, does it not? Only his poll numbers are still not quite danger zone territory, but a lack of confidence now could kill him.
Next debate is do-or-die for Jeb!
