Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Texas clearly needs atheist, realistic looking dildos, that have a beer recipe inside them, and that you can drink beer from while sodomising yourself with 5 other ones.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI looked it up; the Britannica thing doesn't even appear to be true. So thanks for including made up shit in your commentary. Hell, I doubt anyone would even try to enforce most of the things on that list. And the filming thing is happening in many places, not being a problem specific to Texas.

Can we move on from trying to justify mocking people?

So I've been listening to today's Benghazi hearings off and on. Clinton laughed at one of their questions, and she really shouldn't have even if it were justified. It'll probably be making its rounds as a soundbite within the day.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."Good. The more absurd she makes the hearings sound, the better for her and for the Democrats. Were I in her position, I would attend but refuse to answer any questions on the grounds that the committee is illegal under House rules. I would make my testimony conditional on the RNC paying for the entire cost of the proceeding via check to the U.S. Treasury.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Do you suppose part of the reason Trump has been doing so well with the GOP base is the constant Benghazi and E-mail reminders? I imagine it's all starting to sound silly even to those who see the Clintons as just about as bad as you can possibly be without also being a secret Muslim, and a quick Googling doesn't turn up a whole lot of Trump quotes on Benghazi.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."Because it's one of the few things he hasn't commented on very often, if at all. Mc Carthy, the guy who was the heir apparent for Speaker of the House, flat out stated that they'd been pursuing the case to ruin Clinton's run. Trump's success is in part to appealing to a small yet very loud part of the voter base, and while bashing on Hillary might be part of it, it is far from the whole of his current success.

Is made in China the future of American transportation?
The British aren't the only ones selling their country to foreigners. Wonder if they will put this in the textbooks and contrast it with the Chinese building the Transcontinental railroad. A symbol of American decline if their ever was one.
That was the last time we built railways with Chinese help. Now it's a Chinese state owned enterprise getting it's claws into the US transportation sector, and the only high speed rail line being built in America. You can't tell me that if you were the Chinese you wouldn't put this in the textbooks as a symbol that the "century of humiliation" was over and now China was emerging as a world power.
Edit: Oh and while the Chinese workers may not get paid much, even more humiliating if they treat us like some South American country and bring over their own workers for the project, I assure you their executives will be paid quite handsomely.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
Whatever. Are you suggesting that I should be scared of Arriva buses and trains
because they're not 100% British? Because I'm not. :/
Dude, get a grip: globalisation means a lot of this kind of thing.
So? They've got a long way to go, and this is no longer a world in which there are clearly defined good guys and bad guys. We may wish to maintain our global economic dominance out of amour propre or whatever, but America Good, China Evil is way too simplistic a worldview to be sustainable.
For all that you claim to be an independent thinker, you sure do channel a lot of very juvenile rhetoric that comes mainly from the right.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And we're hostile to theirs. However, the hostility is largely irrelevant as long as we are economically interdependent. The reason Obama is so juiced about TPP is that he's channeling the very narrow interests of U.S. intellectual property holders, which have virtually nothing to do economic value and everything to do with rent-seeking among the elite.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's a sign of a lazy goverment that refuses to properly stimulate its economy and is more concerned about doing stuff on the cheep them boosting its own economy. That's not inherently the same as a week or declining country.

And then there were three (and Lessig jumping up and down hopelessly in the background).
And what exactly, Jack, do you see as the nefarious scheme behind Chinese made highspeed rail? Seems like a positive thing if people have high-speed rail, the source of construction be damned.
We've told you before, China's probably not going to be doing so hot in a few years because their economic growth is in a downturn. The century of "humilation" might be over, but they're going to be going through their own growing paints, and their government is inept and non-monolithic.
The worst thing you have to worry about is Chinese soft power.
