Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think anyone here said that Trump is going to fall down after the next debate. Why would he?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"But a large part of me wants to see a Sanders vs. Trump election. A Socialist vs. a Fascist would be one hell of a between-a-rock-and-hard-place situation for US politics.

Who said Trump would fall down after the debates?
He'll fall and not win the primary, but that's because a lot of actual primary voters aren't being polled/giving their opinions yet, the latecomers who will come to the raise when it's actually in a reasonable time frame are also not going to be Trump voters, that combined with the combining of the voters for sane candidates as they slowly start to drop out, will be what brings Trump down.
Yes Trump is ahead in the polls, quick check though, when was the last time the person leading the primary polls at this point actually won the primary?
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI think we all just predicted an eventual fall, and did not give a specific date. Certainly a lot of other people who are not in this thread seemed to think he'd fall sooner.
I don't know if it's weird or indicative of something that the two most popular candidates right now are not men who've served in any sort of political office before, though. You'd think that Jeb would be better at campaigning since he's got his own experience and his family's to raw on here.
Jeb! is dragging the specter of the Iraq war and his family's legacy with him, it doesn't matter much how good he is at campaigning. He's been on the defensive on that front since about May, when that student flat-out said that his brother created ISIS.
"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."Trump's projection keeps rising, but the level of projection blunts after every debate. It's just that there is enough time between debates for people to go back to the Trump show and it rises again.
That said, with candidates dropping out, the others will get more time to perform in the debate, which will give them more traction in the polls...unless you are Christie or Jeb.

Kasich. Pity the rest of the party does not realize this.

Fiorina and Rubio may not be getting outrageous numbers, but their debate performances have ensured they will stay above five percent, while the guys who don't get a bump in the debate are at less than 5%. Jeb is an exception only in that he started very high and just keeps going lower.

I wouldn't say he's a shoe-in just yet, since there are plenty of Republicans, let alone the party leadership, who dislike him. (though I don't think the other Republican candidates are all that different, some of them quite eager to prove it).
However, it seems to me that the non-Trump candidates are doing more-or-less the same things that lost Mc Cain and Romney the election before, so many people are obviously interested in a different angle for pushing their interests. But is it different enough to get enough votes for the presidency, or are the bases too solidified?
And I'm pretty sure that nominating Trump would also guarantee a significant Democrat voter turn-out, no matter the Democratic candidate.
Going back to gun control, an eight year old died when her mom dropped a gun
while braiding her hair. Why one needs a handgun to braid hair absolutely mystifies me.
Marsha Lynch said she was braiding her daughter’s hair when a handgun fell to the floor and fired, striking her in the leg and then shooting her 8-year-old daughter in the head.
Sharia Lynch died from the gunshot wound before she could be airlifted to an area hospital.
“She was a precious little girl, she made everybody laugh — she was the kind of kid in class everybody loved,” said Ann Arnold, principal of Sara Ragsdale Elementary School. “Our hearts are just broke. We’ve got a lot of tears going on, of course. We’re in shock right now.”
The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether the gun belonged to Lynch or her adult son, and authorities also want to know why the .9 mm handgun fired when it was dropped.
A firearms expert said a standard safety feature should have prevented the accidental firing unless the gun had been altered to give it a shorter trigger pull.
Two of Lynch’s daughters who live in the home have been placed in child protective custody.
Deputies seized a rifle from the home during the investigation.
Authorities said they believe the shooting was accidental and are not investigating the girl’s death as a homicide.
And this might not technically be American, but it's about Best America: the new Norwegian slang term for "crazy"
. Totally sounds legit. I might start using it here in the US.
Texas Monthly discovered this hilarious (or humbling, depending on your perspective) piece of slang on a Tumblr page. The magazine accumulated several pieces of evidence that this is really a thing in Norway, and gave these examples:
Here is an article from Aviso Nordland from March 2014
about reckless international truck drivers traveling through the northern part of the country. Norwegian police chief Knut Danielsen, when describing the situation, tells the paper that “it is absolutely texas.”
Here’s one from a 2012 edition
of Verdens Gang, a Norwegian tabloid, in which Blackburn Rovers soccer manager Henning Berg—a Norwegian former star who played for the British team—describes the atmosphere at a match between the Rovers and the rival Burnley Clarets as “totally texas.”
And here’s a fisherman telling the local news
about the rare swordfish he caught in Northern Norway: “I heard a loud noise from the bay, but I did not know where it came from right away. Thirty seconds to a minute later it jumped out in the fjord. I got to see some of it before I took up the camera,” he says and continues: “It was totally texas!”
A Norwegian explained what "texas" meant to him in a Reddit discussion earlier this year, writing: “When I think of the word I picture a cowboy crashing a party and shooting two revolvers into the air. ‘It’s completely texas!"
So entrenched is this idiom in Norway that a restaurant called Dolly Dimple's uses "helt texas" to characterize its pizza deals.
Note, for those planning on using “texas” as a substitute for “crazy” while in Norway (or elsewhere, perhaps) it is an adjective that applies to situations, not people. So, you can’t call Gov. Greg Abbott “texas,” even if you really believe he is crazy.
Urgh. This is why I'd like to see a basic training requirement prior to allowing a firearms license. Because if every gun owner could be presumed to be trained in basic gun safety, then civilian courts would be able to adopt the military's position (that there's no such thing as an accidental discharge).

I'm not sure if that actually should (or will) be taken as an insult to Texas. Having your state be a slang term for "Crazy" makes the place sound Crazy Awesome more than anything.

Leviticus 19:34It's okay. I'm not in Norway.
Back on topic: Obama announcing plans to fight drug abuse.
FF Shinra is making me think I should run for President.
C'mon, who WOULDN'T want to vote for the guy with the slogan "I'm with Tomu?"

You guys keep saying that the next debate will be the fall of Trump and that nobody will actually vote for him, but where is the proof? Even after the last debate, not only is he still at the top of the Repub. polls, but he's leading among the GOP in S.C., New Hampshire and Nevada. At this point, it looks like no matter what Trump says, he will never shoot his foot to his followers.
Add to that the fact that Carson is in 2nd place, and it's stopped being infuriating and simply sad. Shameful, even. Two lunatics are leading in the GOP presidential race, and there's nothing anyone can do to touch them.
