The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bah, the solution is simple. Don't give to any charities; they're all scams.

Well ideally charities wouldn't be necessary but these types of people tend to fight pretty hard to keep that from being a reality.

Charities can also go out there and do more experimental social programs that wouldn't pass muster with the government even when the government is pro-poor.

Yeah, but objectively speaking, you get a better rate of return on social programs through the government than through private charities, which tend to have high administrative costs.

So just donate your millions to the IRS.

The biggest surprise to come out of Hillary's e-mail scandal is even more evidence implicating Bush and Blair in lying to the public about the Iraq war.

It turns out that yes, there was some astonishing details hidden in Hillary Clinton’s emails – just not what the Republicans thought it was. Newly released information indicates that then-President George W. Bush had reached a secret deal with British Prime Minister Tony Blair to invade Iraq – nearly a year before the invasion took place. A secret meeting took place in April 2002, where Colin Powell wrote that “He [Blair] will present to you the strategic, tactical and public affairs lines that he believes will strengthen global support for our common cause,” Powell wrote, adding that the prime minister has the skills to “make a credible public case on current Iraqi threats to international peace,” according to Newsmax.

It flies in the face of Blair’s public declaration that he was attempting to find a diplomatic solution to the manufactured “crisis.” It also reveals Blair’s collusion with the Department of Defense in fabricating and selling the “evidence” which convinced America that Saddam Hussein’s regime had weapons of mass destruction (it didn’t) and that they were involved in 9/11 and planning to strike America again (they weren’t). Tony Blair, desperate for the United Kingdom to regain some of its influence in the global balance of power, went along with everything Bush asked him to, including creating the fake narrative that Saddam Hussein had an unmanned aerial vehicle program that could deliver a WMD “within 45 minutes.”

It adds to the heaping mound of evidence that our nation was lied to, not just by our leader, but by those of our allies as well. The Iraq War will be remembered as one of the most catastrophic disasters our nation has ever brought upon themselves, the pinnacle of neoconservative arrogance and the hubris of American exceptionalism, preconceived even before 9/11 ever happened and organized to maximize the profits of defense contractors and fossil fuel companies like Vice President Dick Cheney’s Halliburton, which made $39 billion in profits over the course of the conflict. George Bush has a lot to answer for; it now appears that Mr. Blair does as well.

It's not going to convince the die-hards, but it might solidify support for Clinton among voters who were questioning her fitness over the email issue.

Yes, but most people don't give a good goddamn about which email server she used. The primary concern has been that she may have inadvertently leaked classified documents but the defense against that charge has been that no classified information was sent via her private email — and that the whole thing is a partisan witch hunt to begin with.

That defense continues to be vindicated.

Newly released information indicates that then-President George W. Bush had reached a secret deal with British Prime Minister Tony Blair to invade Iraq – nearly a year before the invasion took place.
That's a hell of a claim based on the text of the letter. The relevant portion says "On Iraq, Blair will be with us should military operations be necessary. He is convinced on two points: the threat is real; and success against Saddam will yield more regional success."

It certainly means that Bush was feeling out his options with an eye toward invading, but "Bush checks to see if close ally would support military action" is not the same thing as "Bush makes secret deal to launch invasion".

And it's commonly known that the Benghazi committee was instituted as a taxpayer-funded political attack on Hillary Clinton. However, it's much different if we obtain specific statements that conclusively prove this. People can deny anything up until the smoking gun is placed on the table in front of them.

Lindsay Lohan wants to run for president in 2020.

This campaign is DITW. She won't turn 35 until after 2021's Inauguration Day, and that's not going into the fact I wouldn't vote for her anyways.

The debate is scheduled. I don't know if the participants have been finalized; usually they wait to decide until a week or so before based on the most up-to-date polling results.

Sometimes pro-gun arguments annoy me. Gun ownership is a fundamental right, so it was put in the Constitution, and because it's in the Constitution it's a fundamental right. The logic is so circular it makes my head spin.

On a different yet somewhat related note, if I had a dollar for every time I heard that Ben Franklin quote about liberty and security I'd be able to fund a SuperPAC.
