Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

No, but banning certain guns purely for looking scary is the current policy of the Democratic front runner, so there's still a rather large hurdle to be climbed.
X3 As the current democratic front runner wants to ban hunting rifles that don't require reloading after each shot and have a flash suppressor and a folding stock (two things one could easily find helpful while hunting), it's not that insane a point.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran
And gun enthusiasts capitalize on it by buying up "scary-looking" guns to troll those Democrats. It's a never-ending cycle.
x4 I thought I was liberal but yeah those guys are kinda nuts.
I personally am for banning military quality stuff. As well as licensing all guns and gun use like cars, like require a person to say visit a gun range and take a test to prove that you can actually handle a gun right and handle gun safety, storage and upkeep. You want a gun? Prove that you can handle it basically, those who can't pass can't own a gun or get arrested for it.

To be clear, I believe that a gun-free society is safer in toto then a gun-owning society. However, the process of getting there is far too complex for a simple "ban all guns NOW" approach to work.
In the near term, handguns are responsible for the vast majority of gun crimes; regulating them would be far more effective at reducing total deaths than regulating "assault rifles".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Automatic weapons have already been tightly regulated to the point where they are extremely difficult to acquire without a special license. I've explained this probably about a dozen times.
Also, the "we don't need X weapon that looks scary for hunting" argument is getting really stale.

Well, of course. You don't even need rifled firearms if you really want to take this to its logical extreme. You can hunt with a smooth-bore musket if we're talking pure necessity.
The point is, as already noted, that most of our firearm-related problems are related to handguns, so all of this really seems like a moot point.

I think we need to treat guns like we do cars. Make people pass a safety course before they get their license. Give learners permits for taking your kids hunting where there needs to be a licensed adult with them at all times they have the gun. Register and track them the same way you do cars.
I don't think banning them is the answer, especially not in rural areas where people do actually use their guns to get food and to protect livestock from coyotes. Pistols should be much more restricted than they are though.

That's what I've been pushing for a while. To continue that comparison, I don't need my sports car or sport bikes, but there is a license you have to get for a motorcycle, and juveniles are prohibited from operating a motorcycle above a certain engine displacement (250-400 cubic centimeters). Likewise, if I want to operate my sports car at its full potential, there are sanctioned racing competitions I can attend to do so. If I do the same thing on I-40, that's on me if I get my car impounded.

You can hunt with a compound bow if you really want to feel like you're getting back to nature, but even in my most extreme moments of wanting to rid the general populace of firearms, I have made specific allowances for hunting and "ranching".
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I can safely say that the average gun owner is in favor of licenses and other checks for owning a gun like a safety training.
It's the NRA that keeps shitting on everyone.
For people not needing a semi automatic rifle for hunting. People don't need a lot of stuff anyway and still buy them simply because they want or enjoy them, so the "you don't need X to do Y" can fall under a lot of stuff and gets moot fast.
Inter arma enim silent legesIt's the same logic used to justify things because "they are in the Bible". I have an authority that says so, so nyah nyah.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Was a joke. Because. You know. Those Medal of Dutycommandhonor people are basically the guys who single handedy bring wars to end because freedom

Isn't that the definition of novel?
