The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I really wish they had gone for a more balanced debate structure there. I know it was Hilary v Bernie and the others were extras, but O'Malley was the most impressive candidate to me and Webb was (at the very least) amusing.

I can't disagree. The debate was Clinton vs. Sanders with some other guys. Even the lead-in gave it away. CNN and Cooper made no pretense of fairly distributing talking time.

Now, in some fairness, the polls agreed with CNN's evaluation of the candidates' importance long before the debate. To give complete parity to Webb, Chafee, and O'Malley would probably not have mattered in terms of the outcome of the primaries. But it still smacks of bias, and that's something that CNN is ostensibly supposed to avoid.

Of course, none of those three seemed prepared to take the national stage, either. Maybe O'Malley, but Webb and Chafee oozed "also-ran" in every fiber of their stage presence.

It could all just be because Hillary Clinton has much higher name recognition, so they figure talking about her will draw in more readers/viewers.

[up] Again, obviously. But then why all the pretense? Just call it the Clinton-Sanders debate and stop trying to make yourself look fair when you obviously aren't and have no intention to be.

Same reason: because presenting themselves as far draws in more viewership.

Again, obviously. I'm making an observation that the modern media is selling lies and people seem to be buying into it for the entertainment value, with a real cost in terms of the potential quality of political candidates and their debates. #FeelTheBern?

The thing is, though, is that if the media says that Hillary's victory is a foregone conclusion, it becomes one.
That's their goal, at any rate.

Who buys these books? I always see them in the best seller section at my local bookstore but I never see anyone actually buying them.

Cynically, a lot of the politician's business allies buy them as a legal way of channeling funds to their campaign.

That URL does not work for me. But it doesn't surprise me in the least. A Fox News contributor lied? Boil my britches and fetch my smelling salts, I do believe I shall faint.

I maintain a point of agreement with the media on Sanders' debate performance: he could have done better at explaining and defending his pro-gun position. Speaking as someone who broadly agrees with him on the subject, he needs to articulate specifically what he wants to get done on gun violence, and not try to pretend that he's "being pragmatic" on the issue and "trying to do what's possible." He's trying to get exactly as much gun control as he wants and he should be clear about this.

Sometimes I wish that Fox News would just collapse. But then something else would probably fill the far right nutwing void it would leave behind. *sigh* It's not too much to ask for a news network to do basic fact checking like making sure it's guests are who they say they are.

Regarding CNN; Well, if they keep pushing Hillary as the winner she will probably become known in the minds of potential voters as the winner. I think she still has the most widespread name recognition. Part of the reason for googling Sanders would be to find out who he is to start with. I mean, I know we're all paying attention and know who the guy is, but that doesn't mean that everyone who say the debates last night doe or has been before now.

[up][up] That last statement is Shaped Like Itself. The problem with the debate format is that it does not provide enough time for the candidates to elaborate on the details of their platforms; it mainly lends itself to talking points. There is no room for Sanders to go in-depth on his positions.

I would, personally, like to ask Sanders some detailed questions about his economic platform, such as whether he intends to use debt forgiveness to relieve spending constraints on consumers, what he views as a good inflation target, which individuals he plans to choose as his economic advisors, and such.
