Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My Internet is giving me a terrible time watching the debate, but Webb, Chafee, and O'Malley are definitely getting sidelined. Webb in particular is very petulant about it. The other two are being good sports. I think that the debate over how to handle "too big to fail" banks got a bit silly; they all agree on the broad strokes, and the specifics would be hammered out in Congress anyway. The solidarity between Sanders and Clinton on the email issue was heartwarming.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think all of the less well known candidates have a right to be angry, though. A debate is supposed to expose them to people, not shill the top contenders as all of the debates so far have done. And in a small field like the Democrats, it should not be that hard to showcase everyone.
And let's be thankful Webb was collected when he addressed this, instead of going Trump on everyone.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."Theoretically I think you can join in at any time, but as with all things regarding politics, there's a point at which it's not practical. I know people are rooting for Biden, but I think if he was going to do it he'd have done it by now. The first debate is a pretty big thing to miss, even if most voters aren't paying attention right now.
And Hillary reminds us why she's the heir apparent. She's able to get in a solid hit on Sanders' gun control position while not being vulnerable to similar attacks on her own moderate-ness, and she even managed to campaign on "I can win and the Republicans are lunatics" without sounding like she's surrendering.
Honorable second place to Sanders, especially with his really cool way of blowing off the whole email thing. He knows it's a dead letter and any attacks along that line will just embarrass whoever makes them. Still, he needed to be a lot more secure in his position on gun control and he was rightly savaged for botching his defense of his position.
Webb and Chafee fall on their faces. Webb complained that he was being sidelined (which he was, but he spent too much debate time on that), and Chafee really made it look like he didn't know what he was doing.
Yeah. Cooper tried to force the email thing over when even Sanders was telling him it was a waste of time. And Hillary rightly smacked him down for it. Hope we get a better debate mod next time.

Webb didn't do much better, though. He's trying to stake out territory that's way outside bounds for a Democratic leader - hawks just won't fly. (Ba-dum-tish.)
I think O'Malley is building himself a strong candidacy for the VP position, which may be part of why he's been focusing his attacks on Sanders. He's looking to be built up as the next President (which is a good thing, because the Democratic Party is really short on leadership talent right now).
Wheee, super long post from six pages of the thread.
2) The F-35 is a poorly designed piece of crap. IMO the Navy at least would be better off giving Lockheed the finger and opening bidding to companies to actually compete at producing a carrier fighter jet, because the F-35 isn't one. The Air Force might be better off with the F-35.
3) Also what Silas said. They've gone something like a decade in delays and multiple times the original cost of the aircraft in additional fees/overrun. What we ought to do is take it out of the CEO/CFO personal accounts.

It should be, the focus on things that have no effect on ones ability to kill, rather than ensuring background checks happen and that dangerous people are not given guns, is a big roadblock towards gun control reform.
