The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Stever Tyler, the frontman for Aerosmith, has asked Trump's campaign to stop using the band's song "Dream On" at Trump's campaign events.

Why is it always conservatives that get bands yelling at them to stop using their music?

Keybreak (Long Runner)
#103083: Oct 11th 2015 at 5:40:20 PM

Because liberals use music liberally.

Conservatives are expected to follow conservative rules.

They are more likely to hold opinions that the bands find abhorrent such as racism in Trump's case.

Because musicians just skew liberal, I imagine.

That probably depends on the genre of music I'd image.

Well most liberals won't be playing country music. Liberal or not don't they still have a legal obligation to protest people using their music without permission? Do liberals just not do that or are they ignoring that obligation when they do?

I don't even think it's a matter of genre or even age group. Aside from certain sub-genres with an inherent political bent such as patriotic country music or anti-establishment punk rock, it's going to vary from person to person. Gene Simmons and David Draiman come to mind.

I'd say that the obvious answer is "many artists are liberals".

Yeah, even Aerosmith, the guys who got their own rollercoaster in Disneyland.

Many artists skew liberal, except for country.

It is a shame that they're basically the only 'conservative' genre. I'm a conservative and dislike most country music.

I mean, of course, this is just a general trend of overlapping sub-cultures rather than a hard rule.

When did country music become associated with conservative politics? The last 20 years, likely after the Dixie Chicks were slammed for criticizing Bush?

Many artists are liberal. Many aren't.

This just seems like a fairly moot observation.

[up]In the case of Aerosmith wanting Trump to not use his music, I'm sure it's not political in nature at all. I'm just saying that, outside of maybe country, most artists skew somewhat liberal.

What are Right to Work laws, and why are conservative politicians for them and someone like Bernie Sanders against? You'd think that giving people the right to employment is something the Left (such as it is in America) is more likely to do.

Also, if I want to know about the US (and California and Los Angeles in particular), what is a good way to know?

most artists skew somewhat liberal.

It's not like I have an official percentage, but I highly doubt the above claim, especially given how many rock groups have leaned toward libertarianism.

If we're talking about artists in general (novelists, essayists, painters, violinists, etc.), yeah, that's an even more nebulous claim to make.

"Right to Work Laws" are laws which allow people to work without joining unions. Leftists believe this'll cause a 'free rider' problem where people benefit from unions without having to play by their rules.

Conservatives argue that people shouldn't necessarily have to join unions or play by their rules in order to work.

When both of them got associated with stuff like cowboy hats and Southern accents and big trucks?

Right to work laws basically undermines the power and influence of employee unions, makes them harder to form, and in general contributes to making situations worse for employees since it curbs their ability to use their force of numbers against a company's force of money.

And it's well documented that states that are "right to work" generally have a lower minimum wage/average income than union states. Right to work just sounds nice; no one can pass a law that sounds like it's hurting you.

[down]That too. Basically it sounds nice but actually leaves employees at the mercy of an employer's whims.

Right to Work basically means it's impossible for workers to unionize.

It's also always paired with At Will Employment and often At Will Hiring.

Meaning your boss can fire you for literally any reason whatsoever. Or no reason at all.

Oh really when?
