Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x4 Argh. And, I hate that tarot deck
, too. It's too wide for my hands (even the so-called playing card sized one) and the names are stupid! (As well as that, Harris was basically economically abused in its production — what a surprise.
)
Thelema is an odd thing. :/
And, don't get me started on what it does to the Tree of Life
. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
PS: I may not like Crowley or his "philosophical outlook" very much. If you can tell.

I know. I myself don't think it's entirely implausible that he may have been in some form associated with old scratch. Way I figure, it's possible Satan uses dictators (such as Hitler) to try and set off the end times. He just never gets far enough and has to move on to the next one.
Of course, a hole in this theory is that dictators almost by definition have certain goals that are also associated with Satan, so it's hard not to draw parallels.

Leviticus 19:34Man. Look at us. Supposedly trying to discuss politics of the U.S and instead discussing about the coming of the anticrhist, hitler, and crazy extremists with weird names.
If I did not know any better, I would almost mistake us for the actual U.S Congress.

Pfft, we're much less passively aggressive towards each other. And this is off topic, no matter how entertaining it might be.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Protagonist: News flash: Crowley wasn't involved with anything more dangerous than his own ego, self-centred narcissism and too many books on dodgy Gnostic thought, Masonic conspiracy theories and butchered QBL. And, a shitload of drugs.
Having said that, his ego was dangerous enough.
In short, he was the Ayn Rand before Rand.

Well, I collect occult literature for the ambiance leather tomes bring to my room. Also useful for story ideas. That's about as much stock I put in it.
By the way, the United States doesn't have an official state religion does it?

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleIt's not supposed to, but people will always tell you that America is a "Christian" nation.
Mrs. Betty Bowers disagrees.
But then, she can be pretty negative.
I just think that people get caught up in the idea of how America was brought up on Christian values and always touts them, but they don't acknowledge that everybody will follow them.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay"Protestantism". Or the church of st. Genericus.
There's also American Civil Religion.
Leviticus 19:34@ Ace of Spades- I know, right? It's like a "know it if you see it" thing. I don't know if there is a specific term for that kind of rhetoric, but I recognize it immediately.
Like I also feel pretty safe betting he owns a fedora.
Edit- Actually, there is sort of a term for the general idea- Dark Enlightenment
or Neoreactionary
.

/Euodiachloris: who's Crowely?
Way I see it: America is a Christian nation as long as we think of it as such.
As for the founder's intentions, I think they themselves were divided on the topic (some, such as Adams, said rather theocratic-sounding things about America).
I think most of them were going for something pseudo objectivist in nature, though.
Leviticus 19:34

Deism
was what most of them were kind of into. It was hip for the time.

Why do these types always use fakey old English? Do they think it makes them sound more official or powerful or something? They just sound ridiculous.
