Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A thoughtful analysis and historical overview of political correctness in the US and how the fear of it has shaped political discourse.

I imagine the tea party will either have a field day with Mc Carthy or use his lack of coherency as a way to launch a coup with their own nominee for the speaker's position.
Soon, politics will devolve to Word-Salad Horror
Soon, America. Soon. it is soon that the worms that gnaw and thaw chunks of our hearts will illiteratelly rip the spirit of freedom from the briny depths of our funding taxes pool. It is from there that the strike will come. It is from there that our children and the spousing values of christianity will rise like a slumbering monstrosity to crumble our fundaments. It is a large monster, and its steps are heavy laden. Bear this in mind when you trudge to the voting ballots, bear this in your mind, in your stomachs and in your souls, for it is the armor forged in the flames of desperate temerity that will vanquish the creeping angst that clutches our American heart.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.We have a man who was raised by a KKK member, who kept a book full of Hitler's speeches by his bedside, going on rants about how an ethnic group is responsible for all of the problems in America, and our response is to laugh and go, "LOL, that wacky Trump."
I worry that we're going to keep laughing all the way to the Trump presidency because there's still no unified position against him. A lot of people know that a Trump presidency would be bad but if we can't agree on an alternative, he's still going to win.

it is better to think about the incoming halloween party, and christmas.
And my birthday. Do not forget to get me a present. It is on december.

A shooting at a community college in Oregon has left at least 15 people dead and more than 20 wounded, according to local news reports.
The shooting took place at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg on Thursday, CNN reported citing Oregon State Policy.
Roseburg is about 290km south of Portland.
The local fire district advised people via Twitter to stay away from the college.
"We responded to a report of a shooting at the local community college and it's a developing situation," Officer Dwes Hutson, of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, said.
CNN, citing a county official, said the shooter had been detained. It said at least one woman was shot in the chest.
The college was immediately placed on lockdown.
Umpqua Community College has about 3,000 students.
Its website was down on Thursday, and a phone message left at the school was not immediately returned.
Here we go again.

Inter arma enim silent leges
What I saw was "The shooter is in custody
" - which is kind of a rare thing, though they also didn't mention if said custody included a hospital bed and/or a trip to the ICU before the precinct.
Bet you money it's a college-age white male drunk on an embittered sense of entitlement.
Because it's always a college-age white male drunk on an embittered sense of entitlement. Except when it's a high school-age white male drunk on an embittered sense of entitlement.

If he gets to be Speaker, we'd all better hope that the President and Vice President remain in good health, but Congress is unlikely to get anything useful done. Which represents no particular change from the status quo.
What it looks like is that the House GOP wants to put a guy in the Speaker's office who is basically a doormat for whatever they want to do, rather than someone like Boehner who was occasionally willing to tell them to sit down and behave like grown ups.
