Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even Donald Trump doesn't like Martin Shkreli
, the douchebag who jacked up the cost of a drug he'd cornered the market on.
"That guy is nothing. He's zero. He's nothing. He ought to be ashamed of himself," Trump said.
Trump noted that he has put hedge funders in his crosshairs. He has said "hedge fund guys are getting away with murder," and he has suggested he would hike taxes on hedge fund managers by eliminating the so-called "carried interest" loophole in the tax code if he were elected president.
"And he's a hedge-fund guy, who, as you know — the only one that I'm raising taxes on. They are going to be paying up," Trump said Wednesday.
I hope the Republican voters aren't buying Shkreli's "free market" shit.

That's the thing that makes Trump such an odd duck. He has relatively sensible attitudes when it comes to unfettered free-market capitalism and the evils it creates. He's not particularly religious. He is, however, an unabashed racist and is running almost exclusively on that platform.
And that's another lovely libertarian fallacy: the idea that "buy this expensive, unique thing or die" is a choice in any meaningful sense.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"![]()
I read about George Wallace and his past. It turns out that he ran on a fairly moderate-left platform, talking about the things that people needed, and was even endorsed by the NAACP. However, his opponent just used the N word a lot. His opponent won.
Wallace vowed that he wouldn't lose like that again, and he started throwing all sorts of racism around, and won based on that.
There really are a lot of emotionally-manipulated idiots who let their baser nature control them, and vote based on that.

Oh, it is a choice, there's no question about that. It's just Hobson's choice
is all (I'm aware you know this). With literally fatal consequences for not making it. The man in question has blood on his hands and I'd love to see him held accountable for the deaths.

Well, the way I see it, a guy who's manipulating the law to create a monopoly on a drug so that they can arbitrarily raise the price isn't actually using a free market. They're un-freeing the market for their own personal gain.
Leviticus 19:34Let's put it this way: by declaring himself above morality, governed only by the crab bucket mentality of the market, he has also implicitly declared himself above any protection by government, so anyone who can get past his security could murder him and it would be in keeping with his philosophy.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There were two stories this past week of vultures like him who bought a drug patent and then tried to raise the price of the product by a huge amount. One sold it back to the non-profit he bought it from under media pressure, and the other one (I think it's the HIV drug guy we're talking about) agreed to lower the price.
I am not aware of any stories of anyone who actually died as a result of being unable to acquire the drugs during this brief period of time.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Hey, it's not government's job to protect people from the consequences of their voluntary actions, right Shkreli?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Of course it's wrong, and should probably be illegal, but like the other commenters I find myself incapable of sympathy in this particular case.

Yes, we did. Often with delightfully colorful terminology such as "N-word turned inside out."
It's easy to forget because over the years, the Irish have been folded into the "white" umbrella. We don't hate them anymore. Our reactionaries are too busy hating blacks and Muslims, as well as the surprising new threat of women, to deal with the Irish anymore.
