The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Exactly. If anything, that makes the school look even more stupid should it be true, which I doubt.

Whatever the case, we got issues with deep tans over here.

[up]reminds me of a story one of my old social studies teacher told us, about how her sister back in the 60s was forbidden to enter a restaurant because her deep tan made her look black.

I had a math teacher once that went to a Catholic School. She said one of the Nuns got so mad at her left-handedness she tied her left arm behind her back.

Being a lefty ain't easy, lemme tell ya. I dealt with alot of shit from a couple of teacher's and the older students over it when I went to Church School (a Baptist one) for preschool and Kindergarten.

Of course once the Pastor found out, he got them off my back. And I think the teachers were fired.

But I digress

On the topic of the clock, conservative bloggers are saying it looks like an IED, thus justifying the school's negative reaction to it. And of course, they're going to repeat this talking point because they feel it justifies a case of blatant profiling.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

Actually, I think that's the point. A layman can't tell an IED apart from a homebuilt electric clock. Ergo, suspecting that it was a bomb is at least somewhat forgivable.

If they thought it was a bomb why not evacuate the school? Or call the bomb squad? Or take any safety measures?

They never thought it was a bomb. They just saw an opportunity to lock up a brown child.

Oh really when?

Okay guys, be honest with me. What good does mass deportation and a fortified border with Mexico do for the US?

Because I assume those actually do something good, for somebody, somewhere. Maybe not as much as they say, but there must be a benefit.

It keeps America a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Nation and in the 1950s~1980s and keeps that filthy diversity out.

It earns the politican responsible the undying love of racist voters, that and it will also catch up a lot of legitimate South American migrants/descendants of migrants (who are in the US legally/are US citizens) and thus diminish the power of the Hispanic vote.

What good does mass deportation and a fortified border with Mexico do for the US?
According to the people who support it, it will stop us from spending all our welfare money on illegal immigrants, and stop dangerous criminals from entering the US and murdering our citizens in their homes.

However, 1) it will cost far more to build and maintain than it would cost us to pay every single border crosser welfarenote ; 2) it's against the ideals of the USnote  by playing to the ever-present racist voters; 3) it won't actually in any way be effective, as corporations that depend on cheap under-the-table labornote  will act to undermine it at every opportunity; 4) it'll be even less effective because the criminal enterprises (drug cartels) will find more ways around it than they already have to get their product over the border; 5) it makes us look like East Germany.

Also it will cut tax income, as illegal migrants do pay taxes but don't claim welfare. Also is looking like East Germany really jaywalking? Then again, how did East Germany punish jaywalkers?

[up] Five years of hard labor in the camps? I don't know, just guessing.

Anyway, a border wall would accomplish nothing useful. It would make commerce harder, wouldn't significantly impact the flow of drugs (in fact, by making them a bit more expensive, it would increase revenue to the cartels), and it would significantly impact U.S. businesses that depend on cheap imported labor to hold costs down.

Obama and Francis: Different views on the state of the world On September 23, U.S. president Barack Obama will host Pope Francis in Washington, D.C. The two leaders, one described as a towering figure of American progressivism and the other as a liberal revolutionary, are often seen as allies. Strangely, the two men hold starkly differing views on the state of the world. Whereas Obama sees the world as generally improving, Francis’ statements often verge on the apocalyptic. Who is right?
