Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

IIRC, Corporate Personhood is just a term meaning that groups of people can be legally treated as if they were one individual. In fact, abolishing corporate personhood would probably result in banning unions and class-action lawsuits.
Leviticus 19:34I meant South Carolina in regards to the primaries. The neglected states of Dixie, the Great Plains, and the Interior West have votes just as valid as those of the blue states. Similarly, the Northeast, Great Lakes, and West Coast have value in Republican primaries even if they lack value in the general.
While victories in Iowa and New Hampshire would be a massive boon for Sanders' campaign, they don't show how he'll play in other states, where the diversity of the Democratic base becomes more apparent.
Considering that Cuba is largely associated with South America, and the pope is South American, AND Cuba has quite recently opened up to parts of the world it was closed off from.... I fail to see how it's a snub rather than just a preference.
Not everything is meant to be a spit in the US's metaphorical eye. Frankly, as a country, we could stand to take insult to less things.
We get weirdly touchy about Cuba still. Doubtless there are some, even Catholics, in this country who'd rather see the Pope shot for even visiting there.
The whole thing just shows politics > religion. The latter will conform to the former every time, unless in the case of Church Militant like early Islam where the religion made the politics by force.
Wouldn't surprise me any. America has a smorgasbord of religious nut jobs.

You can't make this stuff up.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.I knew this wouldn't take long. Some conservative media voices are accusing Ahmed Mohamed of setting his school up for scandal
.
Is it just me, or does this sound like a smear campaign designed to deny the fact that America has a discrimination and profiling problem?
That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

Shrug. All I know is they're basically the proving ground states for both parties for whatever reason.
Though Citizens United has probably thrown a monkey wrench into their power.
