The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The news stated this was possible because there was a very low demand for the drug (not many people actually need it) so only the one company ever found it profitable in any way to manufacture it.

And this definitely smacks of a lack of ethics; whether it's illegal or not is another issue. Other countries have laws that prevent this sort of price gouging in the medical industry. Ours, evidently, doesn't.

@Jack: Because the fact that China didn't automatically collapse the way Russia did somehow means that things can't be improved in Cuba. There's numerous differences. For one, Cuba is a literal neighbor. Two, the regime right now is largely dependent on the Castros. Who knows what'll change when those two guys finally die.

Bit interesting is all. Speaks a lot of how absolutely everything is a partisan issue in America now.

Oh really when?

Reminds me of a study I read comparing the drawings bored politicians would draw in the margins of the papers in front of them. By and large, Republicans would draw geometric shapes while Democrats would doodle figurines.

An interesting exception was Reagan, who would draw figures like a Democrat.

That is an oddly specific study. Kind of funny, though.

Most studies are very specific. Because the ones doing them are trying to unlock some secret code.

But now I'm really curious to see all these doodles done by bored politicians.

Doodles by presidents.

You can see the geometric thing reflected in Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Nixon's doodles. Kennedy uses more words that doodles, Clinton drew puns and penises and all I can say about LBJ is WTF.

Is LBJ the one who called his tailor about his pants cutting into his balls? I sorta remember that from watching Last Week Tonight. Really makes a case for wearing loose, comfortable pants....

[up]Yeah, but he had a point. Alot of shorts/pants are nut crunchers.

I mostly prefer to draw stick figures, assault rifles, and the occasional cube or triangles myself.

Still though, when it comes to art Johnson was apparently very...creative. And Regan, I had no idea he could draw that well.

Damn Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan doodles are kinda good, drawing geometrical figures is something I share with Nixon.

Jefferson was really into macaroni, apparently. How strange.

Obama's not bad either, his look kind of like the style of a lot of political cartoons I see.

Trump is still far and away in the lead.

With Scott Walker out, who knows what might happen next? If Jeb Bush withdraws, nothing is certain any more.

And how, precisely, have I been wrong on everything? What is "everything"? What commandments have I made that have been proven dead wrong? Did I ever declare a winner early? No, that was you.

As for your Rove remark, there are plenty of people here who would attest otherwise, people whose opinions I respect far more than yours.
