Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What I mean is that Rubio has angled himself into a position where most of his policy stances give him enthusiastic support from the Tea Party base, while the rest — like his immigration policy — are designed to give him broader appeal. Romney was called out for changing his stated policy — basically telling different audiences what they wanted to hear, and contradicting himself in the process. Rubio has remained pretty consistent, it's just that he appeals to different audiences on different issues.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Without a mind-reading device, it can be difficult to tell how much of any given politician's ideology is genuine versus affected. With Romney, we got a rare insider look at his true affiliation: to the wealthy class. It became obvious that all else was affectation for the sake of votes.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"After stating that Islamic members of government should swear to uphold the nation's Judeo-Christian heritage and be forced to swear their oaths with a bible, Carson defends himself, stating “Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that’s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.”
From our perspective, yes, but not from the perspectives of the voters they are trying to convince.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Say it with me: "Awwwwwwwwwwww shucks".
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!""Wait weren't the Koch's backing him? Where will all that money go now."
Probably not to Trump, Carson, or Fiorina. Which means as these smaller more more Establishment/Business Republicans drop out, their combined supporters and financial backers could possibly revive one of the other staggering candidates.

Remember that Rubio initially made it into the Senate by primarying out Charlie Crist (a moderate Republican at the time, since defected to the Democrats). He's an opportunist rather than a true believer — but in the end, that just makes him more dangerous, because he's capable of toning down his rhetoric in order to avoid completely alienating the moderate base.
