The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Rubio should not be held as an example of anything good in Republican policy; he's a complete airhead who hides his lack of substance behind a soft-spoken demeanor, and he subscribes to all the nitwit ideological talking points except "kick out the Mexicans".
My impression of Rubio is that he's just riding the Tea Party wave. I don't think that he buys into his own bullshit, but in the long run it doesn't really matter, because he'll do whatever he needs to do in order to get elected and re-elected, which means he'll act like he buys the bullshit because that's what gets him votes.

Remember that Rubio initially made it into the Senate by primarying out Charlie Crist (a moderate Republican at the time, since defected to the Democrats). He's an opportunist rather than a true believer — but in the end, that just makes him more dangerous, because he's capable of toning down his rhetoric in order to avoid completely alienating the moderate base.

Eh, Romney tried toning it down for the general. Cue the etchi-sketch speech

What I mean is that Rubio has angled himself into a position where most of his policy stances give him enthusiastic support from the Tea Party base, while the rest — like his immigration policy — are designed to give him broader appeal. Romney was called out for changing his stated policy — basically telling different audiences what they wanted to hear, and contradicting himself in the process. Rubio has remained pretty consistent, it's just that he appeals to different audiences on different issues.

True, though I'd say that the difference there is that Trump actually believes what he's telling people, while Rubio just pretends to in order to get votes.

Without a mind-reading device, it can be difficult to tell how much of any given politician's ideology is genuine versus affected. With Romney, we got a rare insider look at his true affiliation: to the wealthy class. It became obvious that all else was affectation for the sake of votes.

After stating that Islamic members of government should swear to uphold the nation's Judeo-Christian heritage and be forced to swear their oaths with a bible, Carson defends himself, stating “Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that’s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.”

No never mind you basically have to pass a marker of "In at least some Christian denomination to not be looked at funny" for the President. Or be Mormon.

My first thought on seeing this Ben Carson story right in the heels of Trump's slip up is that the Republican candidates seem bound and determined to shoot themselves in the feet.

From our perspective, yes, but not from the perspectives of the voters they are trying to convince.

I was really sorta hoping they could isolate Trump's pandering towards the Tea Partiers and cross burners but it seems they just saw his success as the way to go forward.

This is problematic to say the least.

Oh really when?

[up]Not much that can be done about it.Votes are really the only thing that matters to them anyway.

I honestly don't think they realise what kind of fire they're playing with, or they just don't care.

Interestingly this open's Chris Christie up a little, since he and Walker were in the same niche (the guy who kicked librul ass in a broke-ass blue state).

Not that it solves Christie's main problem of looming indictment, but it removes the guy feeding from the same trough.

The crazies can't drop out, you guys have to elect a president who's got a worse past then our PM, it's the only way for us to retain any dignity after today.

"Wait weren't the Koch's backing him? Where will all that money go now."

Probably not to Trump, Carson, or Fiorina. Which means as these smaller more more Establishment/Business Republicans drop out, their combined supporters and financial backers could possibly revive one of the other staggering candidates.
