The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] This reads less like anti-catholicism and more like a typical "everyone we don't like is a Muslim-Socialist-Communist-Nazi-Space-Whale" deal.

[up]X4 Well yeah, American Rightism has a cultural worship of the Puritans, who left Britain because they weren't allowed to burn Catholics at the stake anymore. So anti-Catholic sentiment is to be expected.

There's also the fact that, for a long while, most of the Catholics in America were Italian, Irish, or Hispanic, ethnic groups that didn't always get a very warm reception in the States.

[up][up][up]To be fair, quite a few heads of state(the Italian city states mostly) until about the late 1600's?(please correct me if I'm wrong) or so Were beholden to the Catholic Church.

But there's really no excuse for it in modern times, when Papal Authority don't mean squat.

Ironically, those groups didn't stop being "minorities" until around the civil rights movement. Then it's all about the white man sticking together (unless you're Jewish. Maybe).

Greenmantle: There's actually a bit of that with Bernie right now. Some people are worried he's part of some Zionist conspiracy.

Neo-Nazis are generally far right type people. Bernie is pretty much their worst nightmare.

edit: I'm not saying this is a widespread thing. I've seen it though.

The moderate right neo-cons are, but not the far right. See Ann Coulter's recent outburst.

The far right globally have a weird issue when it comes to Jews, they tend to hate Jews and believe in the same kind of anti-Semitic bullshit that Hitler did, but they also really hate Muslims and see Israel as their best weapons against Muslims.

So they tend to try and act like they don't hate Jews, so that they can get Jews to kill Muslims and then presumably sweep in at the end and kill anyone left.

In the end though the far right are almost as bad as the far left when it comes to unity, in the end evil isn't one big happy family. So they don't always agree.

Usually, the American Right wants to protect Israel basically for religious reasons (what with it being the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity). "Jesus was a Jew, we should protect the Jews" is basically their logic.

Groups like Neo-Nazis hate Jews, so naturally their goals are in alignment with radical Islam.

A nutty minority of the fundamentalist denominations that hold a bit of power with government officials and media networks also believe Israel to be a key player in bringing about the end of the world, so unwavering support is seen to be helping things along faster.

So much for the First Amendment.

Ah, the old constitution card. Well if you want to be super anal about this we might as well disqualify all religious people. After all, Separation of Church and State is enshrined in the Constitution and following a religion means you'd be subservient to a higher power.
