Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, car-makers do intentionally fuck over mass transit to force everyone to get wheels. The New York trolley system, for example; they just bought and dismantled it outright. So nowadays there's significant pressure from the auto industry both in advertising and lobbying to prevent high-speed rail - not to mention that our gas is so thoroughly un-taxed that it practically counts as a subsidy, encouraging more people to get behind the wheel instead of relying on said crappy mass transit.
No corporate conspiracy theories required.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
Nah, there was definitely a conspiracy. But it's not as though the vegan mayo company was also totally clean. Just that the egg industry broke more rules, trying to stamp out the competition.
I wager they'll lose though. The vegan mayo company has tech billionaires backing it.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.I can't tell if this vegan mayo thing is a joke or not.
Anyway, states like Texas could use INTRA-state trains for travel. You have no idea how I'd like to board a train to go visit my sister rather than drive for four fucking hours through just about nothing. Same for my mother, who's getting more and more antsy about driving in the dark, as well. And while the area around Dallas is seeing a lot of expansion as far as light rail goes, there's no push for bigger trains to the south or west.
Too bad more cities couldn't have been like San Francisco. They held onto their trolleys.

No joke. There's hundreds of pages worth of emails detailing how the egg industry (tried) to stamp out the competition.
Again, I will emphasize that the vegan mayo company isn't sparkling clean. Just that the egg industry broke more rules.
I guess I'll be of similar mind with Uber, Lyft and co. They're policies are not as clean, honest, forthright as I wish them to be, but I prefer them over the (bigger) car makers, who likely break even more rules for profit.

Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. So according to some people, Trump is a better person because all of his kids have finished college and are successful, while Jeb Bush's son and daughter were arrested because of drugs, so Jeb is a disgusting person.
Oh, and Trump is proud of his kids because he wants Ivanka on the dollar bill. Seriously, this is what people think.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."If there's one thing we all can agree with, its that most Americans are kinda stupid.
Like in my world history class(we were covering world war 2)when the teacher asked who attacked Peral Harbor someone said the Chinese attacked us, another said Korea, and a third said Germany.
Yeah, wrap your mind around that one.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.![]()
Point. American culture has a toxic "Know-Nothing" element that persists to this day and is particularly pernicious in certain demographic groups. It's not just among the poor, either; a lot of affluent folk pride themselves in ignoring science and logic and chasing down the latest bogus claim by some TV quack.
To an extent, this comes down to education, but it also comes down to parenting, with adults either too overworked or too ignorant themselves to instill in their children a thirst and respect for knowledge.
I'm not sure that there is any meaningful point of comparison, but America is far from the only country that makes news for the dumb things its people say or do.

And as a European I'm grateful every day for this big ocean between our countries - though it doesn't stop you guys from eavesdropping on us.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyEuropeans are mired in some utter stupidity right now, too, particularly regarding economic issues, so don't play a "high and mighty" card. Who recovered better from the global recession than anyone else? Of course, we didn't get any help from our "Know-Nothings", who are basically an entire political party at this point.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

We really should use more trains in America.
Like I literally cannot think of a country better suited for a huge rail network. Be it for people or cargo.
Oh really when?
