Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Regarding Fiorina in the debate, she was well prepared, she had lines ready to go when asked questions, specific plans for what to do, etc. She seemed smart, crisp, and in control. She even took a bite out of Donald's ass and made him trip over himself to apologize while violating his sacred alpha male tough guy act.
Of course she was also wrong. As in like, horrifically, terribly wrong with her facts, figures, etc.
But she sounded like she knew what she was talking about, and outside of 1 on 1 debates, that's all that matters. (It's frequently all that matters in 1 on 1s too, but that's a rant for another time.)
Ultimately I doubt the Republican primary voters will do more than give her a pat on the head and an "Atta girl", but who knows. The Republican party is so fractured right now and pulled in multiple directions, (some of which may be passing phases, some of which may not) that there's going to be some shake ups in the direction it goes, and those shake ups probably won't be resolved or limited to this election.
(Also I continue to think that Trump crashing and burning are inevitable, and events like this debate will later be seen as early cracks in the armor.)

That doesn't seem like that big a risk in terms of the primary election. At worst, the lack of a concise opposition might end up snagging him the Republican nomination, but in the end it'd still be Trump against a sole Democratic candidate, who'd be the only viable choice for the sizable "Anything but Trump" demographic.

You need a majority of votes to secure the nomination.
Failing a majority, the delegates to the party convention are then released from their candidate to vote for whoever they want.
Note that if Trump somehow gets a slim majority of the primary/caucus delegates, but angers the party establishment, the superdelegates (state party officials who get a vote in the convention) might still deny him the overall majority needed for nomination.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?Mmm. You know, reading a few things there is a measure that appears that I like. witter followers and facebook likes seem to be giving a looksee on what the general populace is thinking.
Many variables are in play here but for estimates it might be a decent thing to take a guess in.
Also is it just me or is Bernie hilarious because he looks like an angry old man that wants to put things in order? All like GOD DANG THESE YOUNGSTER DUN FUCKIN UP AND NOT TALKIN ABOUT THE RACIAL INEQUALITY AHMA SHOW THEM HERE RABBLE RABBLE and it is cute and funny because it is like a loving, angry grandpa?
I am not making light of the subjects he touches, which are important, just of the fact that he is old and crankily angry. That does not make me any less of an asshole, but I have forsaken my dignity a long time ago anyways.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
Why the hell do they wanna sell hard liquor anyway? They already sell everything else-mostly cheap ass imports-but still.
Plus, its Texas's right to deny Walmart their ability to sell liquor, or at least until an army of corporate lawyers say otherwise.

You've answered your own question-Wal-Mart already sells almost everything, so why not include hard liquor?
Leviticus 19:34Cause their employees could drink some of the stored liquor to make working on Wallmart more bearable.
I think there are some laws in the US or at least on each state that require the establishment to acquire a liquor license, but it is for each store not the whole franchise.
Inter arma enim silent legesFiorina cant win because if she seems like a strong woman, she will be perceived as undesirable by republicans.
In the Republican voter mind woman should be submissive, or really really dumb. I mean, this is America, not... Communist Britain.
If I am wrong I will admit it but I bet Fiorina wont get over 6%
Also I am sorry if some people are annoyed that I talk about the front runner.

Hillary has more to lose if there's a heavy debate season. Hillary also has the full support of the DNC. So the apparat is trying to keep the election as quiet as possible to avoid a brawl that might damage Hillary in the general - or worse, allow Sanders to clinch the nomination.
I personally think that they're clamping down harder because the email thing is actually hurting Hillary just a bit - the media have been hammering it loud and long enough that it's mattering by sheer value of repetition, regardless of whether anyone would ordinarily care - it's forcing Hillary to waste time dealing with it repeatedly if nothing else. And if Hillary takes too many early hits from Republicans, Sanders benefits.

Hillary's problem, besides the relatability issue, is that there is a lot of shade on the Clinton legacy that looks like dirt if you spin it the right way, which is exactly what Fox News is best at. It's a vulnerability in terms of public opinion, if not in terms of legality.
On Wal-Mart and liquor, one imagines that the Twenty-First Amendment would have something pertinent...
"The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited."
So states can make their own laws about the import of liquor. I can't see how it's even remotely possible to read the Fourteenth as establishing any "equal protection" claim for selling alcohol.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Do you need a majority or a plurality of the votes to secure the Republican nomination?
