Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even getting Powell back is a bad decision, considering how much a lot of people seem to blame him for much of George Bush's policies.
No one should count Hillary out of the running yet, because as much trouble as she's having she's still a strong contender.

We've got the anti Iraq-war trio now, this is pretty fun.
As for Iraq, I agree that it was a mistake but claiming that it was a mistake because it strengthened Iran is silly, I can have a detailed argument about it after the debates are over if you'd like to.
Edit: And Christie is playing the 9/11 card, we've got a lot of talk of G Bush to be honest.

The fact we need allies and broad public support. Admittedly it probably works better in a straight up war.
Plus, I think Powell is enjoying his retirement too much to come back.
Or EA or AT&T
The horror, the horror.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.I wanna go down the line and find out which ones of them did. I bet Trump has done coke off hookers.
Edit: Rand Paul has gone onto the point of rich white kids getting away with drug use but poor blacks being put in jail.
Oh and Christie has gone full "gateway drugs" on this.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTrump is starting to get put in his place. Thank God; ironically, he really fucked up when he said Fiorina has a beautiful face, because he just undermined himself completely and has pretty much said that people are retarded enough to not see a lie when it's there.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."Powell was fine. If the administration listened to him more, the war would not have gone as badly as it has.
It was Rumsfeld who is to be blamed for Iraq.
As for who is doing well or badly:
Bush is doing a LOT better than he did last time. Trump actually looks exhausted (mostly by Fiorina). Fiorina earned her position on this stage for sure.
Paul is blah.
Christie is flailing around doing his best to get attention. Jury is out on whether or not it will work.
Carson doesn't do well under pressure.
Walker wilted. He's Perry circa 2011.
I think the moderators forget Huckabee exists half the time. Same with Rubio.
Kasich is doing well.
I can't stand Cruz. Thankfully he's doing less well this time than last time. The crowd is less impressed.
In the undercard, Graham is a loon, but a loveable loon, and may even make it to the main debate if one of the main table guys drops out. Pataki looked presidential, but he's unlikely to make it to the big table. In a four person debate, mods forgot about Santorum. Jindal was utterly boring garbage.

Pot isn't that big a deal, at least to me. My friend was a user, the only issue I had was that when the munchies hit he almost ate me out of house and home.
To be fair to Carson, speaking under pressure is nerve racking. I almost got stuck in speech class because of it.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.Christie has come out for nuclear, climate change is being handled weirdly, they're pretty much accepting it, but they're declaring that the "left wing goverment" wants to destroy the economy with what it's proposing.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo is the pool of viable candidates shrinking after this debate? It sounds like maybe five of them have staying power. I think Cruz, Christie, and Trump will continue on for a while out of sheer ego. Trump, of course, has tons of his own money to keep going, as well as a hype machine he hasn't had to pay for. It's been pointed out many times he hasn't even run any ads, he just seems to show up and say things and get all the attention he wants.
Cruz is in the weird place of being disliked by much of the Republican political machine for so much grandstanding and forcing the party into actions they wanted to avoid (government shutdown, remember that?) but having enough popular support that he can make a lot of waves relatively unscathed. He's still pretty popular in Texas. And I honestly can't tell if the public is getting tired of him or if he's got enough staying power to continue being a thorn in everyone's side.

Trump and Carson for sure, those two will be the Republican canidates, with Sanders and possibly Biden for the Dems.
Should make the elections interesting.
Still gonna vote for Sanders though.
Bush getting the band back together? With the execpiton of Powell, that's a bad decision.
Trump-2
Bush-1
Whats his face is right, Iraq was a mistake, Sadam kept Iran in check.
