Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Him and Sanders debating on Social Security and Medicare would be the most fantastically hilarious thing, tbh as the Kochs, Anderson and the Club scream. It would be literally "Let's keep SS and Medicare where they are" vs "Expand them."
Donald Trump on female competition.
I would not vote for this man.

Yep, but the media doesn't find that to be nearly as sexy, so it doesn't make the national news, except for big races.
As it stands, gerrymandering will keep the House locked down for Republicans until at least 2020, and the Senate usually (but not always) goes with the presidential vote.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"People should. Problem is, Congress consists of literally hundreds of people.
The Presidential race is a bunch of people vying to be the one guy rather than countless people vying to be one of the many, many guys. It's simple. Easy to follow.
It's like a reality show, narrowing down to that one contestant who wins it all! They wouldn't be half as successful if they were narrowing down to be one of the many contestants each of whom wins a portion of it all not to exceed the portions the other contestants receive in one of two winning groups both of whom are equally viable groups to be part of but whom have different selection options!
Most people couldn't even tell you what the difference between the Senate and the House of Representatives even IS, let alone who they think would be the best congressman to fill each role in both houses.

Unless suddenly the Congress is filled with the kardashians, honey booboo and the duck dynasty peeps.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesAlso, all representatives in Congress are representatives of a specific state. The President is national. So the presidential race has reason to advertise in Kansas and Alabama, but the next Alabama Senator has no reason to campaign in Kansas. This automatically makes the Presidential race a more widespread effort than senatorial elections.

That's really how they make the majority of their profits; it's fundamental to the business model. Take it away and it is no longer worth being in that business.
Predating on poor people is a huge industry.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Because for a lot of people the option is to take such a loan (and pray that nothing happens to stop you paying it back on time) or starve. Besides have you ever tried reading the fine print of something in the couple hour gap you between your two jobs and caring for your kids? I suspect that what's normally easy to pick up on is difficult when you're in an incredibly vulnerable and desperate state.

He acutely wasn't, and most people didn't believe he was. Bernie admits he's a Social Democrat and wears the label with Pride.
I just want a candidate that reflects my view and wasn't fucking the last president, is that to much to ask

@100917: There are some people who have this "You should do ALL the research before you do or buy anything" mentality. There are problems with that: not everyone is smart/knowledgeable enough to understand it all, not everyone has the time to do all the research, and there is sometimes a lot of conflicting information out there.
This is why we need to protect consumers. Imagine if there was a high risk that any car you buy could crap out on you, any food you buy could be poisonous, any program you download could have a virus, any computer you buy could overheat, any loan you take out could have nasty terms that put you in infinite debt, any house you buy could be on the brink of falling apart, etc. We should have good reason to assume that nothing totally disastrous will happen to us as a result of buying the average product.
I used to have that "everyone should just research everything, the lazy fools" mentality back when I was in my conspiracy website reading phase over a decade ago. I grew out of that belief once I realized that human nature simply doesn't work that way and never will.

This.
Fundamentally, businesses have access to more market information than consumers and have the power to control that information, denying one of the basic requirements for perfectly free markets.

But people should be smart about what they buy as well. Like my cousin who's in the Army, the dumb ass took a dealership loan (or something like that) instead of going through the FCU when he bought a brand new car that he couldn't afford. Then again, he hasn't always made the best decisions...

You may have time and energy to conduct extensive market research on the products you buy. A parent of four who works ten hours a day doesn't.
