The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He kinda already has that though, mostly because he is seen as trustworthy and people are scared as all hell at Trump and clamoring for the most trustworthy candidate that is the least likely to screw them over or make the U.S. The next Nazi Germany.

"The guy who isn't a xenophobic dickwad" may have appeal in this particular situation, but still... he has to compete with the Heir Apparent and the Idea Man. What does he have to offer that would let him stand on a podium next to those two and win votes?

The leftover charisma of having worked with Barack Obama would be his greatest pull IMO

He also ran before and is pretty much seen as the safe option out of everyone especially when you consider the other dems are miss email and a socialist.

How many of you think it'll end up with Ben Carson as the Republican nominee?

I say that because from what I read most recently, he's polling second. Trump is first, but he has a specific charisma that pulls people to him. The rest are split between the other candidates. They're not yet in "Anybody but Trump" mode. But once the candidates get whittled down, I think whoever's second to Trump right now will become the "Anybody but Trump" choice and quickly overtake him for the nomination.

I recall reading somewhere that the White House implied a Biden run would be supported by the president. While it would be weird for Obama to not support his own VP, a nod from the big guy would be more than enough to take that Heir Apparent title from Clinton.

Even in this thread no one seems excited by a Clinton presidency, she's just the better alternative to the Republicans and a more realistic candidate that Sanders. It'd be no skin off anyone's nose to switch from Clinton to Biden.

It's still way too early to use polls as predictive measures.

I still think trump will bull in a china shop all the way to win the nomination and really, on the Dems side only Biden could really stand against him. Clinton is seen as too wallstreet and Sanders is well Sanders.

From the mass incarceration article:

if two-thirds of parolees return to prison, perhaps it is because the economy offers them no jobs and the welfare state excludes them as ex-felons. Their return to the social services provided by incarceration, from this angle, makes a degree of sense.

I'm being reminded here of John Oliver's video on payday loans. It showed an internal memo from one "payday loan" company that showed, using a circle, how such loans keep people trapped in an endless cycle of debt.

[up]That works too.

Though its mind boggling as to why anyone(those with a brain or even half of one) would actually fall for it.

Seriously pause the commercial and read the fine print. Its all spelled out for you.

I've had good luck with payday loans. The trick is to pay it all back on your next payday rather than buying into their loan lengths. It's the long-term they screw you with.

Like, I take out $300, I pay back $306 four days later, everything's cool. When you live in poverty, sometimes shit happens, you need $200, and you can't afford to wait until Friday to get it.

The reason we regulate lying manipulative companies out of existence is to protect people who don't have half a brain cell. People like that do exist, and I'm not a fan of the "if you're that stupid, you deserve it" mentality. There will always be something that a person has little or no experience with that can be used against them.

@ Biden. My understanding is he's like Hillary Clinton if she had any sense of integrity and actually voted with her conscience. He could actually win. People are getting sick of Clinton, and Sanders has the socialist label to contend with.

Sanders's "socialist" label would get as much negative traction as Obama's "socialist" label. The people who would vote for or against him would have done so anyway for Biden or Clinton.

Which seems odd. Trump's positions effectively have been "Democrat on the economic issues, just add racism and sexism."

[up]x4 On the far left yes but those center and undecideds won't go for him when every other word out of anyone about him will be 'socialist' for the entire campaign and all Trump has to do is go 'I am capitalist icon' a thousand times and win.

The racist parts won't get a single mention, this is where Bidan can press hard and win easily.
