Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Cobra, If I were to break into your house you're gonna be at work and probably wouldn't notice your jewelry missing for a week.
And if you're so determined to protect your property, which is fair enough, why not buy an alarm system? That'll make any crook scatter immediately.
Unless of course you're not actually interested in protecting your property and you just wanna experience the rush of playing cowboy and shooting a man.

Oh really when? That mindset is exactly how things like the murder of Renisha McBride
occur.
You seem to have a very unrealistic view of the criminal mindset.

You're assuming that I, a guy who has less than 100$ to his name by the time the rent and all the bills are paid off, is, gonna be able to afford a security system.
That'd be more practical and cost effective than an alarm. Plus I have a fondness for German Shepherds.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair. You're also not gonna be able to afford a gun. Or a permit. Not legally at least.
Besides, unless you're up and awake and waiting your gun won't do shit. It's just another thing to steal. They're pretty valuable.
A sign in the yard or the window is often more than enough.

To play devil's advocate-guns aren't exactly cheap either.

Leviticus 19:34As a consequence of only being effective when you're already in the house, a gun is a terrible security system - especially when you consider the fact that probably 99% of all home intruders are already deterred by the fact that you are physically present in the house.
The only thing the gun offers is the ability to kill some folks as they try to escape the premises after realizing the place is not empty.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAround the rural area I live in, most break ins are drug related (meth addicts looking to get cash for more meth), and they usually target gun owners because around here they're easy to sell for under the table cash.
While they usually target empty houses, meth addicts being meth addicts, running into one offers you no guarantee that they'll run; there's been a lot of stabbings/beatings/shootings (the thieves themselves are often armed) that have happened when they get caught.
Though, the way I see it: The gun is for self-defense while you kick the person out. You can't ethically just shoot a guy in the back. If you wake up (or your alarm goes off) and you grab your gun, you certainly need to give the thief a chance to drop your stuff and run off (or stay put while you call the police and have them arrested).
Leviticus 19:34There's also a possibility that you won't be the one to grab your gun, or that you will but won't be able to hold onto it. A burglar that might otherwise have been inclined to run may be forced to defend himself when you pull the gun on him.
Generally speaking, avoiding escalation to violence is preferable. Introducing a deadly weapon into the picture is a guarantee of escalation.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Under the rules of Make My Day aka Castle Law, shooting a burglar in the face immediately after discovering him inside your home is perfectly legal.
In the United States, we have a law named after a Dirty Harry quote that legalizes murder of any unauthorized person on your property that you suspect intends to commit a crime, because gun culture is seriously insane, you guys.

Inter arma enim silent legesIf you lock your car, or have an alarm system, that just means the person who gets their car broken into is the person who didn't lock their car or have an alarm system.
When you carry a weapon, you may very well make yourself less of a target-but that just means that someone else will be targeted. This, of course, only applies to not person specific instances-eg, muggings and the like. It also assumes the fact that you're carrying a weapon is evident.

I've always been torn on the right to self-defence as applied to property. You absolutely have the right to protect yourself, but shooting a guy for trying to steal your DVD player? That seems like Disproportionate Retribution to say the least.
