The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Aren't the Bushes related to Franklin Pierce? You might have had three already.

I'm pretty sure I read something saying just about every president can trace their family line back to English royalty. I don't have a major problem with presidents being related as long as they're a good candidate in their own right.

It's hardly a small world. "Obama and President Bush are 10th cousins, once removed, linked by Samuel Hinkley of Cape Cod, who died in 1662."

Obama and Bush have as much a chance of being related to any American as they do to each other, especially those who can trace their ancestry back to the colonial days.

The Tropers posting above and below this post are probably my cousins somewhere down the family tree.

Actual News: The California Legislature - totally not copying the state which shall not be named - passed a bill which would register "every adult citizen in the state who gets a driver's license, renews a license, gets a state identification card, or fills out a change of address form with the Department of Motor Vehicles" to vote. The bill is expected to be signed into law by Governor Brown and will go into affect in 2016.

Ohai, brother from the same hominid mother.

Voter turn out by state in the last presidential election.

Some observations:

  • President Obama won 17 of the top 20 states with the highest turnout. Mitt Romney carried North Carolina, Montana, and Missouri.

...

  • The report zeroes in on two overarching factors that boost voter participation: An Election Day registration option and swing state status. The latter point is pretty self-evident — the states up for grabs where candidates spend their time and money are likely to attract stronger turnout. And as to Election Day registration, it's a reflection that voters are really utilizing the option, where available. Of the nine jurisdictions where Election Day registration was an option last year, seven placed in the top 20 in overall turnout, including Minnesota.

...

  • Nevada is interesting, because it is a swing state, but is in the bottom 15 in overall turnout. The bottom 15 states in the report also include the three most populous ones, California, Texas and New York. None of the three were competitive at the presidential level.

I have to admit, I'm disappointed by California's low turnout. We nearly always go Democrat anyway, but come on, put some effort into it, people!

Being a solid state could be an issue for turnout. I mean, Cali would still go blue with 100% turnout, but that's why a lot of those blue voters would stay home. And it would discourage red voters similarly. A foregone conclusion will do that.

Nevada is interesting, because it is a swing state, but is in the bottom 15 in overall turnout.
Hardly surprising. 75% of the population is in Las Vegasnote , and the population of the city is almost literally 50% different people every five years - the place has a massive turnover of people who move there only for a few years, then move to somewhere else. That really pushes down voter turnout, because why bother to register when you know you'll be leaving in a few years?

In other news, Southern Miss America contestants speak out against Trump, Kim Davis, and government shutdowns. Excerpts.

Last night's Miss America pageant took a surprisingly liberal bent after three southern contestants decried attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, chastised anti-marriage equality Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, and took a swing at Donald Trump's presidential candidacy.

In total, 52note  contestants took the stage in Atlantic City to compete for this year's crown, but it was Miss Tennessee, Miss Alabama, and Miss Mississippi who stole the show.

Miss Mississippi, Hannah Roberts, fielded a question about renegade Kentucky clerk Kim Davis' continued refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. While most opposition to marriage equality has come from southern states, Miss Mississippi came down firmly in favor of gay and lesbian couples. Roberts took first runner-up in the competition (Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell took home the crown).

Hannah Robison, Miss Tennessee, was asked about Republican threats to shut down the government if their attempts to ban federal funding for Planned Parenthood are unsuccessful. No federal funds are used to support abortions.

Asked about Donald Trump's amazing rise to the top of the Republican presidential field, Miss Alabama, Meg McGuffin, said the GOP should be "absolutely terrified" of the business mogul's reign at the top of the polls.

Colorado contestant Kelley Johnson also added to the night's queer theme by saying she would choose Ellen De Generes to be the first woman featured on the 10-dollar bill. Johnson cited the lesbian comedian's upbeat style and said De Generes' "entire platform is speaking tolerance and equality for all."

While Nellis AFB is on the outskirts of Vegas, it doesn't account for much of a minority of the personnel - a quick glance at their wiki page has only about ~12k members stationed there, while the Vegas area has over 2 million people. Also, while military people can register to vote where they're stationed, most don't, preferring to remain registered in their home district (if they bother voting at all). Vegas just has a massive turnover of regular people.

America's unstable and outdated Constitution. When the Founders of the US could not convince their King to act, they created an elected King and called him President, argues one new book.
