Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of the two other major figures running right now, Trump certainly isn't going to bring up his multiple immigrant wives, not when he's busy bashing anyone and everyone not born in the US. And Sanders ... does he have a family? I'd gotten the impression from articles that he was single.
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswSanders has a son via a women he never married and three step-kids via his second wife (who is Catholic) he also has a brother who is a member of the UK Green Party.

His opponents on the Right would have a field day with the information he had a kid out of wedlock, and a relative in the Green Party.
Especially Trump, who'd play it for all its worth.
On that note, its almost like Trump is treating the Republican party like a business, one he wants to take over by any means necessary.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.Evidently John Kasich doesn't see a point in pandering to the far right, because he is against another shutdown over Planned Parenthood.
Trump blasts the high salaries of CEO's as a joke and disgraceful.
...
"You'll take a company like, I could say Macy's or I could say many other companies, where they put in their friends as the head of the company and they get whatever they want," he said.
...
Trump also said his tax plan, to be unveiled in the coming weeks, would cut taxes for the middle class and corporations, "but for the hedge fund guys they are going to be paying up."
What's funny is that the otherwise reliably conservative comments are all agreeing with him on this.
In non-election news: The Iran deal made it through Congress thanks to the president's unusually aggressive wooing of wavering Democrats.
...
Obama threw everything into uniting Democrats behind the accord, writing letters and flying lawmakers on Air Force One with him to Africa. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., gave the White House the names of 57 House Democrats to call in August; Obama called each one.
...
In the days after the agreement was finalized in July, the White House set up a command center in the West Wing basement to oversee outreach efforts to Congress. It became known as the "anti-war room" and housed staffers with whiteboard lists of lawmakers for and against.
Obama and senior officials were in frequent contact with Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and his No. 2, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, along with Pelosi.
...
With lawmakers spread around the country, Energy Secretary Ernie Moniz emerged as one of the administration's most effective messengers. A floppy-haired nuclear physicist who spent most of his career outside of politics, Moniz was seen as a highly credible voice.
He popped up in surprising places.
As the administration courted Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., Moniz called into a radio show her brother hosted. When Moniz learned that a top Israeli official was in Montana to step up pressure on Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, the secretary contacted a local newspaper for an interview.
He might be running for office, but he has years of immunity to reality/Refuge in Audacity due to being a Reality TV star. Basically he's untouchable due to sheer perpetual Tyson Zone effect.
Yes but if we see a Sanders presidency he'd be in before Corbyn, and four years of Sanders would likly change Corbyn's view of the U.S. Also Corbyn is going to end up changing his foreign policy over time, the more crazy popularist elements are going to have to go.

Seeing as that happening would require not just the US electorate to have gone collectively insane but also the House and Senate to have gone even crazier then they are currently, I'm gonna go ahead and sane that the U.S. would have been placed under international quarantine by that point to prevent the spread of whatever new disease had sprung into existence.

Clinton's primary obstacle in earning the nomination is the perception that she's out of touch with the ordinary American. Baby kissing, be it yours or others', is calculated to dispel that perception. It's bog standard political fare.
