Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Maybe it's me, but I've always found the Internet to be a lot more liberal than the physical world.
Probably because it's newer, more inclusive, and full of much younger people.
Which means that being popular online may not always be synonymous with being popular offline.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayIt's explicitly banned in the Constitution.

"Yup. That tasted purple."Federal law says lots of things. The laws wouldn't hold up if challenged but I don't believe they have been, largely I suspect because no atheists are willing to try and run for office.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranLaws only exist if they're enforced.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub."You will literally be lynched" is generally a pretty fair argument against doing something.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. That's why I like how laws are handled over here; it's basically "federal law trumps regional law". We have one region that still haves the death penalty - they never got around removing it because it's obsolete anyway. They'd problably remove it the moment some idiot actually trys to enforce it, though.
Really sounds like you need this kind of setup in the US.
Now I want our next chancellor to be a Muslim, just to freak people out when he/she visits the US.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyIt's in their constitutions. I don't know if anyone has been prevented for running though. Keep in mind that this is in the Deep South, so there aren't many atheists willing to run for office anyway, especially when you account for the ones willing to lie or who aren't public about their atheism. Here's a link by the way. [1]
So with the whole what's her face situation, the government should really force them to impeach her really by cutting off all federal funding, power, oil and such. I mean if they arnt going to follow the law they shouldn't be able to benefit from the government.

Well you could always lie and say you're a good upstanding Christian. Politicians always lie, don't they?
If you were going to run as an out and proud atheist though, you'd have to be even more moral to appeal to all of the non-political "good upstanding Christians" of your country/state/city/barber shop.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayIt's kind of weird to know americans put such importance in religion. All we see from your series and movies is a relentless mocking of christianism.
But then again, 50% of the humor in my country is commenting how politicians are corrupt and depraved, and some pieces of shit keep getting reelected.
You claim that God is opressing us, but I see you opressing others without needing a God.

The way current American politics is, being openly Atheist is probably akin to political suicide.
But as long as they got the job done, I don't see why it should matter if they're LGBT or Atheist.
