Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Fighteer: Not when the agencies that would be in charge of prosecuting these companies are headed by "people who have experience in the industry."
"The government" is not one entity, but a tangle of interest groups - and the idea that the rule of law should apply to the wealthy is revolutionary - as in, it would require a massive purge of the entire existing structure of government to achieve. So I think your statement that "the government can do this" is only true in the most technical sense.
"Government sucks, so don't let it do anything?" Sorry, I don't share that defeatist argument.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Your definition of good doesn't match mine. It's really only the rapture maniacs that obsess over the Mark of the Beast.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Well, a proposal for ID Cards
was attempted here in the UK back in the days of New Labour. It failed, amid opposition from both the Left and Right.
Is it really worth trying to tiptoe around them though? These are the same folks that are rabidly pro-Zionist because it's somehow a fulfillment of prophecy towards the end times yadda yadda yadda. It sounds like National ID cards are bad because they lead to the apocalypse but Israel's right wing should be backed unconditionally because they will cause the apocalypse.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."It's even supposed to be used in conjunction with your regular ID. I think it's a requirement for proxy voting. That said, it's obtained for free, and at the town hall, of which every town has one.

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Our country is also massively bigger than yours in both land andpeople. Access and resources are not as uniformly distributed much like how our states are allowed more freedom in individual laws.
You cannot compare the two in this regard.
No voter id for Americans. And be very careful of those that try to push it.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurBecause that would defeat the purpose of voter ID laws. And would let the federal government do something good.
These aren't well intentioned but misguided laws that people are making. They're very deliberate and a malicious movements to prevent people from voting, nothing else.

Oh really when?
x12 By that logic, social security numbers are the beast because everyone's automatically given one at birth. Driver's licenses are the beast because you can't drive without one. Bank cards are the beast because you can't open and use a bank account without one.
I'm of the opinion that any "beast mark" would not be a card, but a visible, physical deformity (i.e. a permanent scannable tattoo). And you better believe if they ever proposed such an Orwellian thing, there would be mass protests, not just from Christians.

Not everyone has a social. If you are born at home, in certain religious hospitals, or depending on your state laws, social security numbers are not automatically given. Just like not all have birth certificates.

That's about as cogent an argument as asking why we should have gun laws when criminals ignore them. You should know better, Shima.
