The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think things like this depend on the fact that society as a large still considers health choices for children something that should be left up to their parents discretion.

Not even factoring in the effect that can have on other children, I've always been uncomfortable with that because it makes children out to be their parents' possessions.

Edit: Obviously being deemed responsible for someone gives you a lot of power over their life but i shouldn't give you the power to deny things to them that have been proven to be in their best interest, barring extenuating circumstances.

Let us count the ways... measles, mumps, rubella, tuberculosis, the aforementioned whooping cough, polio, the less likely (but still around in labs) small pox (and its less dangerous cousins; but, they could escalate), various 'flu and gastroenteritis varients... and good, old anthrax. Oh, and can't forget the new kids like Ebola, HIV and the various little cancer-causers that are being tracked down.

Not dangerous, nor deadly at all... Much less so than super-scary, genetic autism. tonguesad

[up][up]We already control parental health decisions to some extent. If a child is living in unhealthy conditions child services has the authority to take them away. Why should vaccines get special treatment?

I suppose that's because it's not mandatory to do it and people think that if it's not mandatory it's not a serious. And if it's not that serious parents should be able to opt to not do it.

And then you have people against making it mandatory because they think it's not a serious enough matter to take out of the hands of parents, but (one of) the reason they don't think it's worth is because it wasn't mandated by law in the first place.

So, it's a circular thing.

Which is why we should just ignore them and make it mandatory.

I wouldn't trust CPS with this. They have the tactfullness of a sledgehammer. Not to mention their dubious track record of sometimes placing a kid in an even worse home, or back to their abusive parents.

Though vaccinating the kids at school might do the trick.

That does nothing for home schooled kids which is something a lot of anti-vaxxers do anyway.

Most public schools require vaccinations as a precondition of attendance. I recall an impoverished anti-vac mother co-worker of mine complaining that the schools were making her vaccinate.

Question: how much does it cost to get a child vaccinated?

The answer, for the parents, should be zero, covered by the evil Commie state (or by the private health insurance, which evil Commie subsidies).

Vaccinations are 100% covered under all private insurance plans, and I assume public insurance as well.

Captain Crunch passes Deez Nuts in new poll.

It's a bad day for Deez Nuts.

The presidential candidate, who for a glorious moment in late August became the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter, has plunged in a respected national poll, falling to 9 percent and clearly behind Captain Crunch.

In a survey of the "joke candidates" who have filed 2016 presidential bids with the Federal Election Commission, the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling reported Captain Crunch in the lead with 17 percent.

Just inches from Deez Nuts is Butt Stuff (3 percent).

Queen Elsa Ice (4 percent) and Beast Mode (5 percent) come even closer. Then there are Cranky Pants at 2 percent, and Limberbutt Mc Cubbins and 'Murican Cookies (each at 1 percent).

According to The New York Times, which published a profile of Deez Nuts in August, the once-popular candidate is "a registered independent, a supporter of a balanced budget and the Iran nuclear deal," and a 15-year-old Iowa farm boy named Brady Olson.

Brady's views about the latest PPP poll are unknown.

"Polling joke candidates has been fun, but we're going to take a break now and stick to serious people like Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Kanye," said PPP's Tom Jensen

Anybody else kind of annoyed by the whole Deez Nuts meme? The election should be taken seriously.

IIRC, Deez Nutz isn't even a real fake candidate. They where just added to an informal "who you would vote for?" poll.

Well, how is Donald Trump a serious candidate. If enough people want them to be they are. Probably even if they don't mean to be.

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#99998: Sep 5th 2015 at 7:50:56 PM

Trump is a serious candidate because he registered and is actively campaigning. Deez Nuts was a joke candidate from the start. The kid isn't even old enough to be president.
