Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I really hate the whole "parents tell kid to say something cute" thing. I respect smart kids. I do not respect parents talking through their kid.
I remember reading a few years back about an 11-year-old girl in Canada who protested how courts wouldn't give her a say in the matter of which divorced parent she was allowed to stay with. And she was doing the protesting on her own - her parents didn't do it for her. THAT I can respect.
Makes me think of a bit from Love is Evol, where he points out how insane giving kids attorneys of their own during divorces can be, if taken to the logical conclusion.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"An article I read online was talking about that. To paraphrase them:
"If an adult had said something like that, they'd be called an asshole. A child says it, and it's wisdom out of the mouths of babes. Except of course, these are fictional children whose lines are written by adults."
It also could backfire given that it makes your argument sound like something a naive child would say...
Leviticus 19:34With that specific argument I'd say the kids opinion at least needs to be noted and considered, yes possibly overruled, but it should be noted and considered, especially if you're dealing with a no fault situation.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIn the States, between 9-14 kids can voice their opinions on their living arrangements.
Some states allow for a closed session with the judge and say a child psychologist to help the kid feel safe to voice their opinions.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurTrump has stated that he believes vaccines cause autism, drawing the anti-vaxxer movement into his growing tent (along with the Klan and the American Nazi party) and further proving that he is willing to say any amount of populist horseshit to get elected.

Well. As someone who actually has autism, (Asperger's syndrome,) I can safely say that I am offended. Granted, just about everything Trump says is offensive, but this one hits a bit closer to home.

It's kind of awe-inspiring.
It'd be more surprising if you weren't. It's certainly not a rule, but TV Tropes seems to have a disproportionately high number of ASD folks writing and posting. Probably something to do with seeing fiction like a lego set.
I'm told that the emotional arguments work on these folks: Show them the effects of Polio and whatnot through the magic of a video. Have it showing parents talking about how horrible it was to watch their kids wither from a disease they could have prevented, as opposed to autism, which you really can't if the kid exists and is running whatever matrix of genetic code you blended into him.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."
x5 I couldn't agree more.
My only consolation is that the anti-vax crowd will become victim to their own stupidity.
Darwinism at its finest.
They'd probably call it pro-vac propaganda or somethin. Those anti-vax people are quite pigheaded.

Its probably due to a mix of the anti-vac crowd (who should be vaccinated along with their children, forcefully if we must), unvaccinated immigrants (who should be required to have mandatory vaccinations upon arrival whether they're Legal Immigrants or not), and what might be the biggest, factor of all, is good old fashioned complaceny.

The anti-vaxxers aren't screwing themselves over (any more than they're screwing over the general population, yay herd immunity), they're screwing over their kids. And kids are hardly guaranteed to adopt their parents' ideology, so any Darwinian selection here is a fucked-up, unfair crapshoot that doesn't preclude the vaxxers maintaining a stable population from former vaccinated kids joining it.

X5 They won't be victims of their own stupidity, because they've all been vaccinated. It's their kids who will be victims of their stupidity, hell even if their kids grown into anti-vaccine nuts and something happens to them, the something happening will be because of the stupidity of the parent, not the later in life stupidity of the grown up kid.
Edit:
You're an eye in a stone tower, how can you
? It makes no sense!

Still cute then
Parents take time to do that instead of just writing it themselves.
