Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm sure she'll become a martyr for a stupid cause very quickly.
The cause of taking away people's rights. Because their particular version of Jesus said so. (Never mind that Christians who support gay marriage and believe Jesus is okay with it would be having their religious rights trampled upon. But to these clowns, "freedom of religion" means "doing what my particular interpretation of my particular religion wants".)
Hopefully this'll get across to other employees that they still have to do their jobs, even if they don't like it. Not that there was a huge uproar except for a few people anyway, but seeing someone actually have to suffer consequences for trying to ignore/break the new law will probably deter others in this case.
@Jack: the word is "Border". "Boarder" is a person who rents a room somewhere.
If there really isn't a huge uproar, then I think it means that most of the country is well aware of the fact that gay marriage is legal and accepted, even if some of them don't like it.
If they truly thought they had the support of the American people on their side, they'd raise hell. Instead, just a few people screaming "religious freedom!" (with a rather limited, self-serving definition), and that's about it.
What's more likely to happen is that these people rally around separation of church and state, due to defining marriage as a purely religious institution, requiring it to be ordained by an official of some religious organization. (Note that it doesn't have to be their brand of Christianity.)
The exact reasoning behind doing that is a bit too complex for this thread, but I could go into it in the LGBT religion thread. Regardless, I see that as the most likely possibility.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Petty. Well, it feels that way to me, since this gay marriage is something I support. But it's a fucking law about giving people rights. I can understand, say, someone in the 19th century going to jail to protest slavery, but gay marriage is fucking nothing by giving rights, not taking them away. Moron.
Yeah, her case can be dismissed with more or less a cursory glance. I'm not ''entirely' for the gay rights movement, but she is 100% in the wrong here.

Leviticus 19:34I consider it "Discriminating against my right to discriminate!"
Course she doesn't really have the right to discriminate anymore, not in her job.
What fun. I was suspecting fallout after the Supreme Court decision, so this wasn't surprising. I don't really expect religious exemptions for jobs like this, but I can see it as religious people believing the government is trampling on their religion.
Well I'll just keep waiting for God's wrath hurting towards Earth in the form of a giant meteor.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay
He's-a cooking-a something up

Hope your being saracstic, cause I never read that in the Bible. Anywhere. This is coming from a Baptist who's perfectly fine with gay marriage.
An oxymoron, I know, but like the old saying goes, Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Plus if I'm going to hell, it sure won't be for supporting Gay Marriage.

God how I hate bible thumpers, most of them are those born again nut jobs. Wish they'd shut the hell up. They give Christians a bad name.
I Knew one at school, thought she could "enlighten me" about Christianity, despite the fact I told her many times that I'm a Baptist and she's preaching to the choir.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair. That pretty much sums it up. As corrupt as she's reputed to be, there's not much else they can hit her with which will deter her voters. She's already proven her chops when they tried to publicly flog her over Benghazi (no matter the facts of that thing), and are trying again with this. It's also possible that they're trying to keep their base incensed so that they don't stray into her camp.

I believe that the Old Testement stuff, alongside a misreading of other stuff and a very specific reading of Paul's stuff (which even if what's mentioned is considered to be homosexuality, simply puts it in a list of things alongside drinking).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI still want to try and count the number of times things like pre-marital sex, drinking, partying, lying and such are condemn in the New Testement, then compare the number to the number of times homosexuality is.

That's probably the deputy clerks, who have now been told to issue licences or proceed directly to jail.
Also she was jailed instead of finned because fines are designed to make someone comply, and it's pretty clear that she's not going to comply whatever happens, so she's being removed from the situation.
