The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's great to hear. A small gesture in the grand scheme of things, but every little bit counts, especially when it comes to people who have been so consistently marginalized like American natives.

I dislike and how in other situations of this type, the news reports it as something being "renamed"- whereas it is actually a mater of it being given the name it had always been called and no longer having the name imposed from the outside.

Worth noting that Alaska has been calling it Denali for years and literally the only reason it has taken this long federally is because the Ohio Congressional delegation was butthurt about Mc Kinley's legacy, since he was an Ohioan president.

"God damn it! Whose idea was this?"

"Whaddya mean, we've got to reprint all those coffee table trivia books?"

What's convenient about it is that the National Parks Quarter for Alaska, which features Mt. McKinnley Denali already has Denali written on it.

Aren't all monument names imposed from the outside? It's not like the mountain itself gets a say in what it's called.

Sure but this one was imposed from much further outside and much later.

I guess the way I see the issue is that the name was insisted upon by people from outside Alaska and named after someone who had never been to Alaska in his life is what makes "Mt. Mc Kinley" unfitting.

I'm not for the name change. All it really serves to do is confuse people.

It mostly confuses people who have never been there. It's not really a name change so much as the rest of the US finally acknowledging that Alaska gets to name it's own local landmarks.

Before even reading about it in this thread I was under the impression that a lot of the locals kept on calling it Denali anyway. As for causing confusion, things get renamed all the damn time, so that's not actually something I consider a high priority reason not to rename something. Particularly in this case, where respecting the native culture is quite important. Which is the purpose the name change was stated to serve, Protagonist.

Yeah, that sounds to be the case. The park it's in is already called Denali, they kept the McKinley name to placate Ohio.

Never thought I'd used the phrase "to placate Ohio."

Denali is a fairly well known alt name of that mountain, for the record.

Were probably going to have to name one of the new carriers, ether Ford Class or America class, after Mc Kinley in order to south Ohio's wrath.

I have no beef with McKinley as a carrier, assuming we need to build a new one any time soon. As for Kanye.... okay.

@ Fighteer: A US Navy aircraft carrier is pretty much permanently under construction, and after that one is built and commissioned, the oldest carrier is decommissioned.
