Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"I have no fear, for fear is the little death that kills me over and over. Without fear, I die but once."Worth noting that Alaska has been calling it Denali for years and literally the only reason it has taken this long federally is because the Ohio Congressional delegation was butthurt about Mc Kinley's legacy, since he was an Ohioan president.

Schild und Schwert der Partei"Whaddya mean, we've got to reprint all those coffee table trivia books?"
"Sir, they just changed the name of Mt. McKinley back to its native name. So the whole part about it being the tallest mountain in North-"
"God damn it! Whose idea was this?"
"Uh, it seems to have been sponsored by President Obama himself, sir."
"...thanks, Obama. Way to make us waste all our damn money. Damn liberals."
Aren't all monument names imposed from the outside? It's not like the mountain itself gets a say in what it's called.
I guess the way I see the issue is that the name was insisted upon by people from outside Alaska and named after someone who had never been to Alaska in his life is what makes "Mt. Mc Kinley" unfitting.
Before even reading about it in this thread I was under the impression that a lot of the locals kept on calling it Denali anyway. As for causing confusion, things get renamed all the damn time, so that's not actually something I consider a high priority reason not to rename something. Particularly in this case, where respecting the native culture is quite important. Which is the purpose the name change was stated to serve, Protagonist.
We called it Mt. Mc Kinley in tourist season and Denali when the cameras were off, pretty much.
At the MTV Music awards, Kayne West announced a run in the 2020 presidential elections.
Not 2016, 2020. Aren't you a little too early, Kayne?
Were probably going to have to name one of the new carriers, ether Ford Class or America class, after Mc Kinley in order to south Ohio's wrath.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.I have no beef with McKinley as a carrier, assuming we need to build a new one any time soon. As for Kanye.... okay.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

That's great to hear. A small gesture in the grand scheme of things, but every little bit counts, especially when it comes to people who have been so consistently marginalized like American natives.
