Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes. She once said on the O'Reilly factor that Trump had an "army." Okay...
David Duke supports Trump's rhetoric
.
DD (no, not Daredevil) also ran for U.S. Pres in 1992. The fact that a former Klansman and a clueless asshole billionaire can run for President shows how sad America's politics truly are.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."No surprise that Ann "sociopathic fascist" Coulter supports Trump.
Trump got pressed by a reporter (Jorge Ramon) on immigration. He told him to go back to Univision and then had him removed from the room. Though he was later allowed to return.

Trump's campaign stops are looking more and more like Klan rallies. The man and his supporters' stupidity and bile are a collective negative on the overall worth of humanity.

, the one part I thought was the funniest was this:
Man, the Biden family can't catch a break.

The artist formally known as Deviant BraeburnSupposedly a new reporting system at Rutgers University tells students there is "no such thing as free speech"
and to "think before you speak." Nothing has been said yet if students think the policy is Double Plus Good or not.
That appears to be the message a Rutgers.edu web page would like the campus community to absorb. The web page is maintained by the Bias Prevention & Education Committee, which chillingly warns students that there is “no such thing as 'free' speech,” and to “think before you speak.” From the web page
:
Since 1992, the Bias Prevention Committee has monitored the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus for bias incidents and has provided bias prevention education to staff, students, and faculty. …
Bias Acts Are:
Verbal, written, physical, psychological acts that threaten or harm a person or group on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, civil union status, domestic partnership status, atypical heredity or cellular blood trait, military service or veteran status.
If you experience or witness an act of bias or hate, report it to someone in authority. You may file a report on line at www.bias.rutgers.edu and you will be contacted within 24 hours.
Rutgers’ bias incident reporting form is identical to the one used by the University of Colorado-Boulder, which was criticized by free speech and privacy advocates (Reason included) back in May. It asks students to report on each other and provide addresses, phone numbers, identification numbers, and even dates of birth—any information that could be used to identify a victim, witness, or person of concern in a bias incident.
Like Colorado, Rutgers defines bias so broadly that all kinds of clearly protected speech would likely trigger an incident report and subsequent investigation by this Orwellian committee.
However, the university administration seems to be backing off some of the committee’s claims. When Campus Reform first reported the existence of the web page last week, it looked like this
(Edit: Link fixed). By Monday, it looked like this
. The difference? The university removed the assertion that there is no such thing as 'free' speech.
I suppose this means that administrators recently reviewed the page, and stand by the rest of its claims.
I'm all for it. To methey are closing a loophole.
On both my undergrad and graduate campuses we had free speeech zones and often if not always, it was occupied by some entity spewing hateful craps like how we were all going to hell and what not.
So under these rules, one can have a respectful theological discussion or peacefully protest, but you can't stand on the sidewalk with a megaphone or screaming bile and disrupt the whole campus.
I am all for it.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurThe Latino Media's disdain for Donald Trump.
Normally I'm in favor of media objectivity, and skeptical of people who claim our media is too centrist because it doesn't maul the other side sufficiently and hold theirs up like a paragon of virtue. Still, you can hardly call people and their viewers rapists, and call for the repeal of their citizenship, and expect them to objectively cover you.
Plus OBJECTIVELY, Trump is spewing racist rhetoric, OBJECTIVELY he is seeking to undermine a century of Constitutional interpretation, and OBJECTIVELY his tuppe is so obviously fake.
Yeah that definition of bias doesn't seem to be particularly broad. Also some evidence to back up the suggestion that the investigation group is "Orwellian" would be nice.
Now I admit that the desire to take in personal information on such a scale for anyone who is an alleged perpetrator of, victim of or witness to an incident of bias does seem a bit worrying. But that may just be a presentation thing, in the end them wanting to ID witnesses, victims and possibly perpetrators is kinda a must for any investigation.

Certain ideas and certain forms of expression have been demonstrated to be inimical to that environment, particularly expressions of racial, religious, gender, and sexual bias. The "bias police" are overtly stating this principle so that there can be no mistake about it. I generally approve.
Anyway, I've learned to ignore anyone in the United States who screams "Orwell! 1984!" when confronted with restrictions on what they can say in a private setting.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I dunno, I'd say that, in terms of preserving an academic climate, how you present your opinions is more important than what those opinions actually are. If someone wants to argue that Nazi Germany had the right idea, I think they should be allowed to do so, provided they engage other people in a calm, respectful manner and are willing to accept when someone says "I'm not going to have this conversation with you".
That only applies to personal interactions, though. If someone wants to hold a public rally, that's something the university needs to exert more control over.

That's true but time and time again it's been shown that those kinds of people aren't going to participate in a nice calm debate in good faith.
Much better to just toss them all out on their ass.
Wait what? The hell happened? What station is that?

Oh really when?
X3 Is it possible to say "I think that you and everyone like you should be murdered for arbitrary reasons based on race/religion/political beliefs/sexual orientation" in a respectful manner? That rather seems like something that simply saying is disrespectful.
On the journalist thing, BBC are saying two reporters in Virgina shot dead during a live report, that's all I've got.
