Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, but if an argument is popular, then it's useful, which is my point.
On a related topic, one thing I am wondering after the recent school choice roundtable is where the hell the old-school Republican kleptocrats went. Up until very recently, stealing money from Washington for the benefit of rural Republican states was the thing, but right now the only one on the right advocating for anything like that is Kasich - everyone else wants to cut federal funding to the very voters they're counting on.
Maybe we need to send some Alaska Republicans to the Lower 48 to tell the guys down there how to do it right.
The biggest lie the Trumpites believe is that Trump actually gives a shit about them, when his clothing line is Made in China and he brags about selling an apartment to Chinese businessman; that, and deporting every illegal immigrant and their children will take at least twenty years and will end up seriously damaging the economy.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."As Ramidel stated so eloquently, it doesn't matter if a political viewpoint is sensible, logical, or even cogent; it matters that it is popular. Trump's got the other Republican candidates scrambling to come up with mass-deportation plans that are as draconian as his. That's how you win: by getting your opponents to fight on your terms.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"like in defense of Trump you guys are straw manning him.
He explicitly said he wouldn't try to amend the constitution but would seek for the courts to reinterpret the 14th amendment.
This is not as ridiculous as it sounds.
He is just seeking to go from a jus soli interpretation of the 14th to a jus sanguinis one.
There is no reading of the 14th that supports his point of view. It's perfectly clear: if you're born here, you are a citizen. There is no room for semantic wiggling. You're being exceptionally generous to Trump, never mind his supporters, who wouldn't recognize a 'jus sanguinis' if it shot them in the face.
Does he imagine that he's going to get elected and then stuff the Supreme Court with his cronies so they rule in his favor? That's a long-term plan that is unlikely to satisfy his voters.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Like, its actually a pretty common interpretation of the law of the worldwide.
For example lets take Mexico immigration policy.
If Mexican police for whatever reason realize you are illegally in Mexico you will be deported so fast your head will spin.
Or lets look at Japan which uses a jus sanguinis system.
Am I saying that its a good idea? No. But I would expect you guys to be a bit more nuance in your criticism.

BAFFU, this isn't about "worldwide law". The 14th Amendment is clear. It cannot be unconstitutional because it is part of the Constitution. What Trump's supporters want is illegal, full stop, in every way that it is possible for something to be illegal.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There are some legal interpretations out there that put in doubt the 14th amendment.
They are minority opinions but they exist.
He will probably lose in the courts, but if you had 5 Republican Supreme Court Justices IT COULD HAPPEN.
You are failing to fully grasp the gravity of the threat Trump´s approach represents because IT IS THE BEST SHOT HE HAS GOT TO PUSH HIS AGENDA.
The guy is a clown but he is smart.

Well, there's also the problem that if he doesn't give them citizenship by birth, a lot of them will end up stateless and then he can't legally deport them to anywhere which is an even bigger problem than anchor babies.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIf there were 5 Supreme Court Justices who were hardcore ponies, the U.S national animal could become the pegasus.
If there were 5 supreme court justices who were hardcore into BDSM, legal sexual slavery could exist.
If there were 5 Supreme Court Justices who were hardcore warmongers, you might end up going to war with. I dunno. Tuvalu. (And they would still make it sound like they were the victims of Tuvalu).
My point is, if there were 5 completely solidary and united Supreme Court Justices in cahoots with a president and such, loads of things could happen.
Just how likely is it? We know for a fact Trump is not going to get a hefty amount of votes, that have in the past, swayed U.S elections one side to the other.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesThe third one is not, in fact, possible, since the Supreme Court has no power to declare or wage war. Also, the President doesn't have the power to bring suit in the Supreme Court directly; there must be a case delivered on appeal. More likely, a civil rights lawsuit would be brought on behalf of some poor kid who got denied citizenship rights, the lower courts would tell law enforcement to get stuffed on the basis of the 14th, and the appeal would get up to SCOTUS. The justices would then have to have a collective burst of sheer insanity to both override 150 years of precedent and defy an actual constitutional amendment.
To say that it could happen is not a semantically useful statement. You could be struck by a flying house while hiking in Greenland.
Edit: The first is not possible, either, since the "national animal" would be decided by act of Congress, and SCOTUS has no say in the matter. Your post betrays the kind of gross ignorance of how our government works that I'd expect of a Tea Partier, not a participant in these forums.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Besides, it completely misses the point that I am trying to get. The likelihood of 5 insane Supreme Court Justices working in tandem with every branch of Legislative power to do something as radical as fuck up the constitution's 150+ years old amendment is insane.
If it helps, it was intended to be a reply to this

The artist formally known as Deviant BraeburnNot to sound callous, but death is a thing that takes us all in the end. We should celebrate Carter for a truly extraordinary life of public service and wish him peace in his final days.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

It doesn't make the argument valid, just popular. Demographically, the Trumpites are losing, but they're going to kick and scream all the way to the bitter end, inventing ever more fantastic arguments along the way.
