The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So this last nail in the coffin should shut up the Duggars and the hateful bile they spew, right?

Please?

If child molestation didn't, a little adultery doesn't stand a chance.

Dugger spent was the spokesperson for a half a nmillion dollar campaign here that called households andasked them to oppose gay marriage by force if needed and equated gays tonpedopholes.

This is the same woman who knew her son was abusing other children including her own children and not only didn't help her children get treatment, she didn't stop the activity either.

She beast is a very polite term for what that creature is.

And no, that isn't dehumanizing because the most frustrating thing is that isthe very human thing that happens especially here.

Case after case of child abuse here in Arkansas is almost word for word what happened in the Duggars and it keeps happening because everyone doesn't do shit about it. Including law enforcement and prosecutors.

This contributes to everything from higher suicide rates to teen pregnancy to rape culture, to a myriad of other social problems in a state that is regularly last in any progress measure.

Those people are the very abominations they like to claim gays are

She beast is a term associated with sexism and mens right activism types.

It's not that it's an inapt term, it's just that it's a term that you shouldn't use due to connotations attached to it.

It's like using swastikas due to their original religious significance. Sure, technically it may apply, but, uhhh, dude. It's a swastika.

I was feeling sorry for Josh's wife Anna and their four young children in my post...

Michelle and Jim Bob are total wastes of space hatemongers who probably wrecked dozens of lives, including those of their children, with their ideology. Fuck them.

[up][up]Hindus and others have every right to continue using the swastika, Tomu. It's still their symbol even if it is more commonly associated with an ideology of mass murder.

From what I've read, Jim Bob and Michelle thought people would understand and eventually be okay with their son molesting their and other people's daughters.

Apparently straight incestuous pedophilia is okay with them.

[up][up]Things like that depend entirely on context. If it's being used in a place where basically everyone is going to be aware of the original meaning I don't think they should concern themselves about a few westerners or whoever misinterpreting their symbols usages.

The symbol is what it is. Whether it's intelligent and productive to use the symbol has changed due to its association with mass murder.

We're objecting to the usage of the term "She Beast" not to defend the individual, but because of what the language conveys given the context of modern America.

So was passing a TV that was playing FOX News. What's this about Trump saying the 14th amendment is unconstitutional?

Oh really when?

"The constitution is unconstitutional!" That's ... pretty !@#$ing hilarious.

Although, I suppose you could make an argument that the amendment didn't actually get passed and thus isn't part of the constitution, in a conspiracy theorist sort of way.

To play devil's advocate, an amendment that completely contradicts a lot of the rest of the constitution is arguably unconstitutional.

Technically, it is not. That's the thing: the Constitution is, by definition, the highest law of the land. What it says supersedes all other laws. If it says that people born here are citizens, then that is literally constitutional. It doesn't matter whether the thing it says is in an amendment or the original text. The Constitution may only be changed by the vote of three quarters of the states and two thirds of Congress.

Trump's assertion would be laughable in its ignorance, except that he speaks to people for whom the matter is dead serious.

If two parts of the Constitution were to directly contradict each other, it would be up to the Supreme Court to render judgment, but there is nothing in the 14th that contradicts anything else.

Primacy would go to the later dated item. I mean, an amendment is there to change the constitution. Of COURSE it's going to contradict earlier things. We removed a frickin' amendment, you think those two aren't contradictory?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#99067: Aug 19th 2015 at 10:11:37 PM

Trump's an idiot but the idea that part of the Constitution could be unconstitutional is true from a certain point of view. If an amendment overturns an older one the original amendment is still part of the Constitution even if it's no longer followed.

So the question is, what amendment of 15+ says the 14th is no longer in effect?

Did someone add it in tiny tiny font and we're just now finding it?

An amendment repealing part or all of the 14th would say so in its text. That's how Prohibition got repealed.

On the crazy young Trump supporter front, there's a third possible group. Left wing nuts who want the world to burn. They feel that Democrat and Republican are just the same brand of right wing pain and that if we bounce between the two it will never end, so what we have to do is elect a crazy right wing nut who will go so far to the right that they will ruin the country and inspire a communist revolution/proper leftist electoral victory (the last bit varies depending on how violent the person is).

An argument could be made that the 13rd, 14th and 15th amendments were passed by the Southern states under coercion and using a rigged electorate, and therefore they're invalid.

If an argument can make sense to the conspiracy theorists in the Republican base, there's reason for Trump and others like him to make it.
