Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

didn't we liberate the fuck out of one guy in Yemen because he exercised his first amendment to advocate terrorism.
EDIT: I understand why is legal to display the confederate flag. I am just saying people who bitch about the confederate flag being removed by private companies and the government don't realize how strange it is that they are even allowed to be displayed it in private property considering the normal reaction of any other world government, even in western democracies.

I known, it's almost as if we should do something. Perhaps if we even the scales so that white people didn't have a lot of privileges that minorities don't, we'd see a lot less moaning about White Privilege?

Those poor white areas overwhelmingly vote against policies that would be in their economic self-interest just so that blacks don't get the same stuff.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the Confederacy. While I understand the need for a symbol of Southern Pride, I do wish that a better symbol existed.
What makes me shake my head a little is that some places that refuse to sell confederate flags still sell ISIS flags.

Being ignorant of a thing does not make that thing false. You would do well to expand your mental horizons.
While I don't call it 'White' privilege as a general term, there are groups within nations or regions that enjoy certain privileges. Over being the dominant majority, belonging to the dominating minority, having the favored gender, or whatever is the accepted or enforced norm.
In this case, in the United States of America, being a white person has some perks over other groups. Specially on the criminal justice, job hiring and state policies.
Go ahead, just try to be a black man and exercise your 2nd amendment rights in front of a cop in Alabama, and see how well it ends for you.

Most retailers are politically agnostic; they respond to trends rather than make them. And who made you an expert? We can cite evidence to back up our claims, but will you read it?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well for starters, I'm black. And particularly well-read on the subject. You're also putting words in my mouth in addition to making it seem like studying race relations is some superhuman feat.
The problem with many white Americans (and some minorities) is that they regard discussions about power structures and social hierarchies with the same ire they get when they're late for work or when someone cuts them off in traffic. It's not seen as a major intellectual tool needed to navigate our political landscape. Rather, it's seen as a nuisance that should be shooed away like a fly buzzing around your ear.
We have plenty of public libraries and online resources you can use to educate yourself on the matter, but don't be surprised if people call you out when you haven't put in the work to understand it.

It's funny, I read this article recently about Bill Willingham hosting some kind of con panel (about representation of women) and being an asshole. Willingham also brought up that Appalachia argument. I think it's some kind of (racist?) conservative talking point.
The idea that white privilege can't exist because Appalachians (who are almost exclusively white) were dirt poor.
There's a couple of problems with this argument though (besides the logical fallacy):
- Appalachian whites were historically looked down on by other whites
- Appalachian whites were in some respects better off than blacks at a comparable economic level, given that they weren't subjected to legal discrimination or victimized by lynching
- Appalachia and the other areas known for extremely poor white populations have benefited
from
big government programs. I note this because the standard line is generally that these people "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps".

Because the First Amendment says they can't prohibit it.
"Yup. That tasted purple."
