The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Well Obama has only been doing that recently. As I recall he could have rammed Obama care down Congress's throat, but felt the need to be "bipartisan." As it was the whole issue slowed him down for months, especially with the way Ted Kennedy dying cost him his supermajority. And when he did get a few Republicans to vote for the bill, nearly all of them lost their elections in the initial Tea Party wave, sending a clear message on how the base would take reaching out to the Dems.

IIRC, the Democratic Supermajority only lasted like a few weeks. Someone with a better memory on this would be best to explain, but essentially a few seats remained troublesome to fill, especially Obama's former seat.

Enough with your Trump obsession already. There are other candidates to discuss.
It's not irrational to discuss Trump when he's the effective front runner with a 5~10 point lead over any of his Primary opponents.

Well, no, the issue with Obamacare was the DINO Blue Dog Democrats, who were worried about how electable "socialist" health care would make them. I know the former rep of PA-1 (North Hills of Pittsburgh) still voted against it to the end, and then went to work for health insurance companies after reapportionment eliminated his district. Almost all of the other Blue Dogs in the House lost anyway.

Thank god that happened, since now the party is ideologically stronger, although a lot of those almost-Republicans made up a lot of the farm league for Democrats, and in too many districts, conservative Dems are the only ones you can get to run against Republican incumbents.

[up][up]Not when the post itself had no substance other than wanking about how great Trump is.

[up]Not sure how thats a good thing, losing blue dogs. I find it to be as much of a tragedy as losing the RIN Os during the Tea Party surge some years back. All its done, for both sides, is make them impossible to talk to each other or be pragmatic or compromise in any sensible way.

It's a symbol of the polarization of the country, but frankly I'm just as happy with a Democratic party whose members aren't trying to sell out their side to big business or the NRA or whatever.

Ideally, Congress would be composed of a continuum of ideologies, but we don't live in an ideal world.

"Trump actually has the best policy positions of the Republican field

HE IS THEIR BEST CANDIDATE."

I don't agree with that. For one thing, Trump's foreign policy positions are horrible.

The dumb fuck honestly think the Mexican government is competent enough to send all of it's "deviants over here." That is the definition of stupidity. Weren't some actual Mexicans offended by that suggestion?

Edit: Oh and pissing off Japan when we need them now more than ever to balance China. Wow we are truly dealing with a modern day Bismarck.

One of his positions is open hostility to Japan.

Never mind that they're one of our closest and most trusted allies and the entire lynchpin for our entire military presence in the Pacific.

Apparently he is pissed at them for stealing all our jobs. What is this the 80's? Everyone knows it's China that will be our future overlords.

Well. I have no doubt that the grasp on economics of Mr Trump is secluded, but I just want to know if he specifies manufacturing jobs, or technical jobs, or some other sort. Because if he means manufacturing jobs, then he is even dumber than I thought, but if he means other sort of technical or even engineering oriented jobs then he is still stupid, but just a bit less.

I would just like to know just so I can have a more appropriate measure to the schadenfraude I derive from his words.

He just says jobs. No specifics or anything like that.

The whole jobs bit is a race thing, not an economic thing.

Lol I talk about other candidates, everyone ignores me.

I talk about Trump and everyone loses their heads wild mass guess

I am starting to feel like the 24 hour news media.

But for example back home there was this really interesting editorial about how what Trump says about us isn't any more demeaning than all the decades of being the "backyard of America". And of having civil wars and coup d'etats actively sponsored by people like Clinton or Reagan.

So the people who dont like America (which in Mexico are almost everyone) will whine about the U.S but latin american politicians will usually fall in line and bend over.

So Trump saying he will make Mexico pay for the wall doesn't sound particularly absurd. Its just business as usual.

Too be honest I can't think of anything any of the candidates have said about Europe, good or bad, beyond concerns directly related to Russia. I vaguely recall reading something - might have been this thread - about how Obama was annoyed that mollifying the east half of NATO was taking stuff away from his pivot to Asia plans.

This is so true it hurts.

The current opinion I've seen is that our current president will NOT do what Trump says. However, this'd be just to gain time until the 2018 elections.

I mean, if he accepted to pay for a wall at the border (or just increase security at our side of the border), most people would take it out against his party (PRI), and in the coming election they'd vote for the PAN (the right wing loonies) or Morena (the left wing loonies). A lot of people want neither one of those as president of México.

So, if the government of México bends over to not piss off the U.S. (and they probably will unless we get a really bold/dumb president like Fox), they'll do it until 2018/2019 IF it looks like Trump or whoever's in charge is going to get re-elected.

Also, the Mexican government can be cunning/competent when it wants to be. In the case of illegal immigrants getting to the U.S., all the government does is look the other way, and that's more than enough. I mean, any Central American immigrant trying to get to/through México knows that our immigration laws are even harsher than in the U.S., so yeah...
